Publisher's Description

A fascinating personal account of a libertarian feminist agnostic who discovered a dynamic faith.

Kitty Foth-Regner was a secular feminist who had bought hook, line, and sinker the ideals and objectives of Betty Friedan's N.O.W. Kitty's mother-a woman of faith-became sick and clearly was destined to die rather quickly. And the author began to wonder about whether she would be in heaven with her mother someday. This led her on a personal journey of faith. Heaven Without Her is Foth-Regner's personal memoir of how she found, to her amazement, that all the evidence points to Christianity.

Heaven without Her is a memoir of the author’s beautiful relationship with her mother and her heart’s search for the faith her mother held so dear.

Kitty Foth-Regner was almost convinced that it was impossible to know anything for sure about the universe or her place in it. Even though she had been reared in a Christian home, she never truly understood the beliefs of her parents. When her father died when she was a child, Foth-Regner decided to write off Christianity altogether, even though her mother tried to assure her of her father’s eternal happiness. She found herself aligning with the viewpoints of Buddhists, feminists, and relativists instead, looking only halfheartedly for answers. But years later, as her mother lay dying of the cancer that had been wearing at her for years, Foth-Regner found herself promising her mother that she’d see her in eternity, even though she didn’t know what that meant. Not content with blind faith, she dedicated herself to study. Her love for her mother and her curiosity about her mother’s hope and peace led her to delve more deeply into the faith she thought she had rejected.

Foth-Regner’s intent is to share her own search and the proof she found for Christianity. Each chapter of this book tells three stories: the first describes the events surrounding her mother’s death, the second explains the experiences that had shaped her spiritual views, and the third tells of her search for answers. In a prosaic style, she relates events and conversations that shaped her beliefs and her discovery about God, building a solid, well-explained case for Christianity by explaining through a seeker’s eyes the answers she found regarding the origin of the world, biblical prophecy, the “big questions” of life, and even Christ’s resurrection. “It took me until I was 47 years old to recognize that it didn’t matter what I believed: what mattered was the truth,” she says frankly.

Readers who are interested in finding some of these answers for themselves will find this an intelligent, conversational source. Even already well-founded Christians will find Foth-Regner’s use of apologetics intriguing and refreshing, and the story of her mother’s effect on her life is a touching one. No matter readers’ current spiritual positions, whether looking for answers or a simple reminder of hope, they will find encouragement in one woman’s journey to the truth. -- Lyndi L. Publisher's Weekly

As a feminist and a successful freelance copywriter, Foth-Regner had a full and enviable life. Until, that is, her mother's fatal illness stormed into her otherwise manageable existence, leaving Foth-Regner shaken and distracted. In this engaging spiritual memoir, she tells her story of coming to faith in Christ by first examining all the plausible reasons for not doing so. Each chapter of Foth-Regner's spiritual journey is filled with examinations of the Christian faith from a variety of vantage points as she dissects historical facts, other religions' claims, scientific discoveries, the assertion that the Bible is inerrant , and much more. Readers will appreciate Foth-Regner's razor-sharp wit and the clever mind that she displays throughout her narrative. Most importantly, she offers readers her brutally open heart, full of wrenching pain, as she prepares to watch her beloved mother exit Earth to heaven. Many will resonate with Foth-Regner's doubts and unanswered questions and similarly find themselves rejoicing on multiple levels as she discovers inner peace with God's promise of the eternal. Foth-Regner includes an extensive section for further reading at the close of her memoir, which in itself is an invaluable resource for new seekers and veterans of the Christian faith. (Apr.) This book covers many topics of confusion or question when one is looking at Christianity. Kitty obviously did a ton of research on these things and does a wonderful job explaining them. She was very honest in her book, even about things I am sure are hard for her to remember or make her feel sad. But we all slip up and treat others badly, even those that we love most. So this makes the story more relatable and, I at least, felt I knew I could trust her book as a whole partly because of this. It is a moving story of a daughter seeking the truth after her mother's death. And also because of this I think it will really hit home with most people. It's not usually until something bad happens or we find ourselves in a scary situation that we "remember" how short and fragile our life on this earth is and how very real death is. And the questions of "where would I be headed for eternity?" and "what is life all about?" usually come with that.

There a couple reasons I rate it 4 stars instead of 5. First, the organization of the book was a bit confusing at times. I understood she was going back and forth from when her mother was near-death and had then passed to the telling of her journey towards Christ, but at times it didn't flow well or it's confusing. But this is generally minor and you have no problem getting the overall purpose and meaning of the book without trouble. The second reason would be the instances when she is retelling of conversations she had with her non-Christian friends. I feel she was trusting too much in herself and her words to turn them to Christ, rather than the power of God. Of course, God uses us to work on His behalf and it's important for us to spread His good news to others, especially those we care about, but I feel she may have taken it a bit too far at times. Sometimes you just have to say what you can, answer the best you can, and then leave the Holy Spirit to work in that person's heart from there. Maybe they need some time or maybe it's a journey they need to take on their own, and hopefully they will see you living a Christian life and will feel comfortable talking about it with you when the time comes. It is not going to benefit them to push the topic on them or to keep talking after they are obviously upset. Not that you should stop sharing Jesus's message at the first hint of opposition, but there are a couple times she mentions a loss of friendship over her friend and her disagreeing on the subject. Now if that happens, who will be the example of Christ for them to see? Maybe there is no one else in their life who will be that and that's sad.

Overall a very thorough and honest book that will affirm your belief in Jesus, God, and the Bible. And if you aren't yet a believer in Jesus, it would be a great book to really get you thinking and I think it will relate to your heart also.

Really enjoyed this book. Was looking for something to share with my daughter (21 yrs old) who is searching & doesn't want to believe that "Jesus is the only way". Kitty shared lots of facts & evidence & many of the same questions she presented are the same things my daughter is questioning. I just mailed this book to my daughter with a loving note so will wait to see how she responds. I really liked the fact that Kitty shared her resources in the back of the book so others who are searching have a great reference guide.

I believe this memoir mirrors the experience of so many women who are left spiritually empty-handed at the end of the day. And it will resonate especially with anyone who, in grieving, has wondered about the realities of heaven. The author grants us an intimate and poignant view of her own loss and spiritual struggle. Then, with the tenacity of a best-selling crime-solver, she sorts through and compiles evidence for faith in Christ that ultimately cannot be dismissed. This book is a must read for the discriminating seeker.
