Since moving from the slums of New York on a fool hardy whim, Claire Nevin has worried about her family she left behind, especially as her father was prone to drink away the hard-earned money that she sent back. So, when a letter arrives from her younger sister, Polly, admitting shes in trouble, the last thing Claire expects to see walking off the train is Pieter Duran. A man she dated once, but who still holds her heart.
The package he bought is even more surprising and one that turns Claires world upside down. However, family is important and she is determined to help Polly. There is a high possibility that Pieter will be able to explain what happened all those years ago between them and that, Claire fears, will mean that there is no reason to not continue to love him.
A sweet novella centering around vibrant characters.
The Tangled Ties that Bind: Mary Connealy
Returning home after five years determined to win the heart of his best friend, Maggie, Connor Kincaid knows hes older and possibly wiser, and therefore ready to settle down to be a rancher.
But when he arrives, besides having to steer clear of a buffalo, he finds Maggie, beautiful as ever, only shes training to be a doctor. Connor expected her to be waiting for him - should he have been nave to think that?
Maggie will not compromise. She waited for a long time for Connor but no more. Set on a new path to being medically trained, shes not going to let anyone, even the handsome Connor sway her. When Connor decides to join her in Denver, their lives take an unexpected turn.
A story fuelled by family loyalty, responsibilities and underlying sexism.
Bound and Determined: Regina Jennings
Private Bradley Willis has been reckless again. This time the punishment is to help retired officer, Captain Herald move a herd across Indian Territory. Expecting cattle, hes surprised to find camels. Theyre not the most attractive of creatures and they spook the horses. Even more of a surprise is the Captains vivacious daughter, Ambrosia. For reasons yet unknown, she doesnt want the camels to head back to her home shes managed to scare off a bunch of cowboys. But, Bradley doesnt scare off easily.
Picking up from the new series by Jennings, Private Willis escapades are taken down a notch or two when he meets a beautiful woman.
Tied and True: Melissa Jagears
Marianne Lister is helplessly in love with business assistant Calvin Hochstetler. The only thing getting in their way is Calvins obstinacy over the difference in status. Marianne is heiress to the Lister fortune and Calvin has just enough money to live on.
Calvin knows what its like to live hand to mouth and he doesnt want Marianne to ever experience that want. He lets her down gently and hopes, no matter how it hurts, that she meets someone who will give her the life she deserves. Determined to prove that love can cross the class barrier, Marianne starts work at a cotton factory. Will Calvin see that the woman hes in love with cannot be compared to the mother who abandoned him when they became too poor?
An unexpected premise of class being an obstruction to being happy.
These four stand alone novellas all have likeable characters and good plots. They cram a lot in to a short story and whilst I found that it gave a slightly hurried feel to the stories, nothing was really lost. There is a link to previous novels, but the stories still work and if anything, encouraged me to read the authors other novels. Overall, they are all well written and I think a good introduction for anyone wanting to read historical romances and not sure where to start.
I received a complimentary copy of this book to review from Bethany House Publishers as part of their blogger program. The opinions express are my own and I am not required to give a positive critique.
Hookmeinabook5 Stars Out Of 5Wow, What can I say? Four amazing stories by four fantastic authors. Need I say anymore???February 13, 2018HookmeinabookQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5In The Love Knot, I enjoyed reading about the love that Pieter had for Claire. That he was willing to risk his life to nurse her back to health and that he did not allow his pride to get in the way of him apologizing to Claire for breaking her heart. I thought that it was great that by the end of the story, Claire had finally stopped living in the past and would finally be able to embrace the future. Overall, I thought it was a very heartwarming story.
I loved the relationship between Maggie and Connor in The Tangled Ties that Bind. The witty banter between the two and the love and patience that Connor showed toward Maggie. It was amazing to me that he would go to a strange place, knowing he would never fit in, just to be close to his girl. The only two things I did not like in the story was that Maggie was very insecure about her medical skills. ( which she did not need to be because she was awesome and proved it.) and that the end of the story seemed a bit rushed. ( can't say anymore, no spoilers!!!) But overall, still a fantastic story.
I loved everything about the story Bound and Determined. The chemistry between Ambrosia and Bradley is hilarious. And the camels... instead of horses or cattle? I almost died laughing, especially Bradley's reaction to the animals and Ambrosia's attempts at keeping all cowboys away and trying to prevent her dad from bringing the creatures home. The entire story was just Amazing...
and finally, Tied and True... This is the first and only book that I have read by author Melissa Jagears and it was fantastic. The plot was engaging and kept your attention until the very last page. The characters were charming, I love Marianne's determination and that she never gave up on Calvin even though he kept pushing her away and Calvin's selfless love, That he wanted her to marry better then he was even though seeing her with anyone else would have torn his heart in two. Overall, the story was great and the ending of the story was the perfect way to end this collection of novellas.
Overall I rate this book ( Novella collection) 5 out of 5 Stars *****
I would like to think Bethany House Publishers for allowing me to read and review this book in exchange for a free copy. All thoughts are my own. I did not promise a favorable review, just a honest one.

Bethany House recently sent me a collection of historical novellas for free in exchange for a honest review. Karen Witemeyer, Mary Connealy, Regina Jennings, and Melissa Jagears each tell a story of strong women that find love. In The Love Knot, an old friend from the past shows up in Texas with an infant nephew she has never met, with instructions to raise him as her own. Claire had moved out west to forget the past, and the rejection of her first love. Peter has vowed to never let Claire get away again, and sets out to prove he is the one for her, even with a baby to care for now. In The Tangled Ties that Bind, Maggie is training to be a doctor and she is not letting anyone stop her, not even Connor her childhood best friend, who has just returned home after 5 years. Connor has grown up and is ready to settle down on the family ranch with Maggie, but Maggie has moved away to pursue her dreams. She is only in town temporary to help her sick mom. There is conflict and humor when they try to compromise. In Bound and Determined, Private Bradley Willis is assigned the duty of helping a retired cavalry officer move a heard across an Indian Reservation. He truly believes he is being punished when he discovers the herd is camels, and the officer's headstrong daughter, Ambrosia is along to thwart the plans of her father. She has been living a opulent life, and doesn't want camels or a lower class private to ruin it. Ambrosia wants adventure, but isn't looking for love. In Tied and True, Marianne has found the man of her dreams. However, her parents have another man already chosen for her in their social class. Calvin is in agreement; he cannot provide Marianne with the life she needs, and tries to get her out of his heart. Marianne sets out to prove she can live like the middle class does by getting hired at a cotton mill. She wants to marry for love, but Calvin loves her too much to cause her to live a life of what he foresees as hardships.
I love the comedy in these stories, especially the one involving the camels. Regina Jennings did a outstanding job describing their trek across the plains that I could easily picture the camels antics and how they would have been perceived in the eyes of the cavalry. I like the historical aspects of the story of Maggie trying to become a female doctor in a time period when they were rare. Connor doesn't expect her to give up on her dreams just to follow him either. The authors also referred to characters from past novels in their respective series, which I was familiar with and enjoyed "catching up on their lives". The beauty of four novellas is that the reader can sit down and read one each night before bed. They are short, humorous, and reminders that God works everything out according to His purpose.
Laura HiltonHorseshoe Bend, ARAge: 45-54Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Hearts EntwinedFebruary 11, 2018Laura HiltonHorseshoe Bend, ARAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0The Love Knot When Claire Nevin's troubled younger sibling sends her an unexpected package by rail, the gift and the man who delivers it--an unexpected face from the past--threaten to upend Claire's life forever. Fighting to hold on to all she has built, will she lose what matters most?
My thoughts: I enjoyed reading The Love Knot and getting to know Claire and Pieter. A sweet story, set in Texas, that held my interest. I especially loved Pieter. He was a sweetheart and full of wisdom. Claire seemed older than her age, but maybe because she was forced to grow up due to life.
The Tangled Ties That Bind Connor Kincaid returns home determined to win the hand of the woman he was too young for when he left. But Maggie is training to be a doctor in a distant town, while Connor's about to settle on a ranch. Will either be willing to give up their dream? Or will they both have to give up the love of a lifetime?
My thoughts: The Tangled Ties that Bind is classic Mary Connealy. It starts out with a bang and a scary life or death scenerio and ends with drama. Connor is good at everything -- so it seems -- and is home for Maggie, but Maggie has moved on and pursuing her own dreams. You have to read this one for a page-turner that you can't put down.
Bound and Determined As punishment for his recklessness, Private Bradley Willis is sent on an errand to help a retired cavalry officer move a herd across Indian Territory. No one told him the herd would be camels instead of cattle, nor that the officer's headstrong daughter, Ambrosia Herald, would seem to be trying to undermine the whole enterprise. He's definitely been saddled with more than he's bargained for.
My thoughts: Bound and Determined is a fun story! One would never expect the cavalry to help move camels of all things, and Ambrosia, the officer's daughter is a spitfire determined to ruin the whole operation! Both characters have their hands full -- and of course, the whole scenerio is a recipe for disaster. I couldn't put this story down. Pretty much the first Regina Jennings book I read. But if this is indication it won't be my last.
Tied and True Wealthy Marianne Lister is in love with business assistant Calvin Hochstetler, but he can't see past the difference in their social status. When Marianne takes a job to prove that she is prepared for a life of hard work alongside the man of her dreams, will it be enough to convince Calvin to risk it all for love?
My thoughts: Tried and True is the second novella by this author I've read. She is a good writer and I have to be impressed by Marianne's go-get-it attitude. And by Calvin's will-power. The heroine did kind of make me dislike her though due to her overly aggressive nature. I've known women like that -- and they were usually after the guy I was dating at the time or the one I eventually married. So I have to say she was realistic. And the author did try to make her likable due to her very charitable nature. I did admire that.
My thoughts on the collection: A well-written collection of historical romances by top authors. I love these as they are quick and easy to read. My favorite story is either Mary Connealy's or Regina Jennings. Maybe a tie between them.
Pamela5 Stars Out Of 5Hearts Entwined is the BEST novella out there.February 11, 2018PamelaQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5When I saw Hearts Entwined Novella with Karen Witemeyer, Mary Connealy, Regina Jennings and Melissa Jagears.
I knew its going to be good!!!! Each one brought back a character from previous books. You can read each one as a stand-alone. Then again they might peek your interest and you just have the read the rest of their books these characters came from.
A Love Knot: Karen Witemeyer
I really loved this story about Claire and Peter. Two loves who were separated because of what Claire saw Peter doing and didnt give him a chance to explain. Claire didnt like him one bit when she saw him step off the train. But he had to see her because he brought a package from her sister to give to Claire. He was also there to win her back. I love these two and how forgiveness is so hard for Claire but Peter was so determined!! Forgiveness is a beautiful thing. Personally: Id forgive Peter as soon as he get off the train. Sigh* LOL
The Tangle Ties That Bind: Mary Connealy
Ive read all of Marys books and it was fun to read about Connor and Maggie as adults. Connor was a very head strong man but Maggie was just as strong and didnt give up her dreams because he wanted her too. She followed her dream to learn how to be a doctor and he followed her. They faced some hard times and learned to work together to save peoples lives. Youll have to read to find out if thats enough for him to let her live her dreams or simply give up and go home without her. What about his dreams??Such a great book.
Bound and Determined: Regina Jennings
Fabulous!!! Funny!!! Really Really Bad Guys!! Camels!!!!!!
What more could a reader want? Awe, I love this story so much. Private Bradley Willis didnt know what he was getting himself into when he was sent on a mission for punishment. The Calvary life was nothing compared to a retired Captain and his daughter Ambrosia. His mission was to help Captain Herald ride camels across Indian Territory. How hard could that be! Love Private Willis and Ambrosia together. It was such a fun book to read. Theres so much I could say about this book but I want readers to find out what happens just like I did.
Tied and True: Melissa Jagears
I have read all of Melissas books and Im so glad we got to read about Calvin and Marianne. He was just a secretary and she was a wealthy socialite. He loved her but saw no way for them to ever be together. She loved him and was very determined to show him it could work. She gave up her rich life to work in the factory with very poor people to prove she could live in his world. I loved this story so much because Marianne wasnt your usual rich girl. Calvin was a strong enough man to see their worlds didnt fit together. It was like whose world would win!! I couldnt put this book down until I read how the author ended it. Five stars for sure!!!!
