Product Description

With no means to support herself, Ellie Kilmer agrees to work as a housekeeper for the young widower who lives on Dillon Island, hopeful she can obtain a proper reference. But Jackson Smith quickly realizes that Ellie's presence may solve his own problems--both the rearing of his young boys and the scandal that surrounds his first marriage. When a marriage of convenience is offered, Ellie is initially humiliated. Though she is past the age most women marry, she has more pride than to agree to his outlandish suggestion. Yet what options does she have? To marry would mean a home and stability. So despite the rumors circling Jackson and his first wife, Ellie accepts this unlikely proposal.

I loved this book. Ellie is such a godly lady that she would not hurt anyone and most of all she would not offend her Heavenly Father. At first it is funny and then it gets serious, so serious you cannot put it down. I would recommend this book to anyone, you have got to see where Ellie ends up in her quest to just find a "Home" and not feel like she has always been kicked out of all the homes she has had. Get you a good cup of hot chocolate and this book and ENJOY....see if you can put it down... Will she find the love she always thought she never deserved on Dillion Island. Can she get past the scandal of Jackson's dead wife?

I just happen to run across this book and WOW what a treat it was! I was in the middle of another book and just thought I would read a page or two and was never able to put it down. Every page just jumps out and keeps you until the very end! I now have to find more of her books I was that impressed. Don't pass this one up. You will be thinking of Ellie, Jackson and the boys for days to come.

Ellie's story is somewhat predictable, but it was one I really enjoyed. Ellie is a spinster at 31-years-old and finds herself almost entirely alone in the world. The only relatives she has left are two male cousins who are not really the nicest folks around. She has been sent to keep house for free for a widower with two young sons as "punishment" for her actions. Ellie makes the two-hour journey by foot hoping beyond hope that the man will give a recommendation so that she might find a position somewhere and no longer be dependent on her Cousin Mark. As the tale unfolds, Ellie finds herself in a situation she's always dreamed of but never thought it would be the way that it is. Along her journey she comes to care deeply for her young charges and their father as well as the island she now calls home. Can God cause a miracle to happen? Can a man truly love a woman as plain as Ellie? Can circumstances so change that true love flows on both sides? A story half full of sadness and half full of joy. I enjoyed journeying through this tale with Ellie as she came to a place she truly felt God wanted her to be. She is a woman of great character and depth and insight. She has a heart for her Father. I found the male lead in the story to be rough around the edges and moody and somewhat dense at times, but I think he had a lot of growing to do and heartache to work through. A good historical read from Delia Parr set in Pennsylvania! Enjoy!

    "Hearts Awakening" by Delia Parr

The setting for this book is in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, 1840. Plain Elvira "Ellie" Kilmer walks into the life of a complete stranger, handsome, Jackson Smith. Throughout this book there are hurts and challenges but Ellie holds strong to her faith. This has such a sweet and endearing ending. I would highly recommend this book! This book was given to me from Bethany House Publishers.

Ellie is a 31 year old spinster who has very little options and even fewer physical attributes. Hired as a temporary housekeeper for Jackson, a young widower, and his two young sons, she hopes only to get a good reference from him and move on with her life. To her surprise, Jackson proposes marriage to her, a marriage of convenience because she is, after all, very plain and has little chance of ever getting married. He needs someone to take care of his boys and she needs somewhere to live. A curt and pointed marriage contract is drawn up and Ellie accepts her lot in life. Ellie's faith in knowing that God has given her this gift of a family she thought she would never have is heart-warming. As Jackson witnesses Ellie's faith and loyalty he begins to open up to her with his fears and insecurities. Expecting her to run at every opportunity, just as all the previous women in his life, he begins to see her in an entirely new light. This is a refreshing Historical Christian Romance novel, a very wholesome and meaningful story. You will fall in love with each of the characters in a way you never expected and may even find yourself laughing out loud as Ellie and Jackson go toe-to-toe and try to find their way around each other.

Thank you to Bethany House Publishers for providing a copy of this book. All opinions are mine.
