Maude had every right to love the apparently enchanting island and to do everything within her power to keep her family's inn safely within the family and the Mackinac Island community. It was my desire initially to become a journalist for a newspaper so I read with intrigue of Ben's position as spy to cover a story with such authenticity.
I am looking forward to reading the next book in the My Heart Belongs series. The book is full of such vivid description that I felt as if I were actually walking along with the characters. I felt such compassion for Ben and Maude. Both of them seemed to be in positions where they felt they were at risk of losing so much. Maude feared losing the inn and her home and Ben feared being discovered at the Grand Hotel.
I give this book a rating of 5 stars and highly recommend it to readers.

1895...Mackinac Island, Michigan...Maude Welling just cannot understand why her father is so adamant about her not managing Winds of Mackinac Inn without a husband. Well, she has to do something to prove to him she is capable of running it without a husband. Thus she comes up with a plan, albeit a risky one at best.
Journalist Ben Steffans--or rather Friedrich Konig--is on an undercover assignment as a wealthy industrialist staying at the infamous Grand Hotel pursing a story about impoverished men chasing women of financial means and heiresses--and maybe a promotion when finished...and finds himself intrigued by an attractive maid.
Circumstances and mishaps bring Ben and Maude together and they form a fragile, tender friendship. As Ben digs deeper into his story he uncovers scandals and secrets that could unravel the fragile love growing. A story filled with mystery and intrigue, joys and sorrows, love and faith. I love Maude and Ben...and Jack is a precious little boy full of energy! There are characters that I was not sure I would like at first but later in the story I changed my mind about them. The authors' description of the Island has me wanting to take a trip and visit and maybe stay for a long while. I would stay at the Winds of Mackinac Inn and maybe get Jack to slow down a bit and take me on a tour. Wonderful, heartwarming story.

Maude Welling, her father and her little brother Jack are all still grieving the loss of their mother/wife, though each in very different ways. Maude is more determined than ever to take over the reins of Winds of Mackinac Inn, her father is just as determined she won't and Jack is determined to become the fastest runner in the United States.
Ms. Pagels descriptive language leaves you feeling the sounds and sights of Mackinac Island, from the grandeur of The Grand Hotel to the impoverishment of the maids. As you read, you feel as if you have truly stepped back in time to a very different life and era. Plus, interspersed throughout the book are tidbits and gems of mystery, love and betrayal.
I enjoyed reading another of the My Heart Belongs collection, and the fact it was written by Ms. Pagels made it even more enjoyable.

Maude Welling has lived on the Island all of her life. Her home is the "Winds of Mackinac Inn". it has been in her family for generations. With the loss of her Mother, the Inn should be turned over to Maude to maintain it and also keeping it the family. Her Father has a health problem and her fiance Greyson Luce is arriving home on the White Star Line Steamship. With Greyson due home, they both can run the Inn. He does arrive -- --but with a red haired beauty on his arm. A new wife.
All of Maude's dreams of her future as a wife and owner of the Inn has disappeared. As she runs from the dock -she bumps into a handsome man. Ben Steffan, going by the name of Friedrich Konig, is an undercover reporter for a newspaper. His job-- is to expose those who are trying to entice the rich and famous people staying at the Grand Hotel.
There are two ways of life on the Island. Those who are the local year round people and those staying at the Grand Hotel living the life of the privilege. Circumstances have thrown Maude and Ben together throughout the book. Will there be love between them? Will Maude lose the family Inn? Will Maude forgive Greyson? Will the people of the village and the rich and famouse of the Grand Hotel ever come to a place of respecting each other?
Carrie Pagels Fancett has done a great job of pulling together two landmarks of the Island -- Each one has a dramtic place on Mackinac Island. She has written page after page of love, loneliness, privilege and of the working class. She has created a fascinated story of life in Maude's Crossing-- giving us a nice look at that era and the way of life on Mackinac Island on Lake of Michigan in the year of 1895 .

rkfall5 Stars Out Of 5Mackinac Island :)July 27, 2017rkfallQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5My Heart Belongs series is a great series to read! If you haven't read any of them, I recommend you check them out! This book is located in my home state and having been to Mackinac Island numerous times, I could smell the water and the horse poo, see the bikes and the Grand Hotel and it felt really personal to read this. To be around the island, on the water and on the mainland was really something that I could see happening. I enjoyed the characters as they were well-developed. There was some mystery and intense moments and happy endings are the best. A favorite part in the book for me was when the leading female is made aware that the leading man is waiting for her and she's quick to jump up and prepare herself. Her maid says, "I thought that might put some rise in your shine!"
