Anne3 Stars Out Of 5If this works for you, that's great--otherwise it's a lot of work.January 19, 2016AnneQuality: 3Value: 3Meets Expectations: 3I have a friend who is a "THM" devotee. It's worked for her. She's very happy. I took a look at her book, and listened to her describe the program. My takeaway--it's way too complicated for me personally.
The book delves deeply into the plan, and you need some patience to absorb it. It's hard for me to understand how it would work for a "hectic lifestyle," to be honest.
In many cases, to create their food, you're supposed to buy their mixes and their sweeteners and their additives... and on and on. In addition, there are lots of ingredients that may or may not be difficult to find, depending on where you live. As a previous reviewer wrote, I don't think food prep should really be this difficult.
If you want to put in the time, then you may really enjoy this. If not, then you are better off sticking with plain old healthy eating... whole grains, vegetables, a treat now and then.
I *did not* receive a review copy.
JanetTemple, TXGender: Female3 Stars Out Of 5A Reference for Determined MamasDecember 26, 2015JanetTemple, TXGender: FemaleQuality: 3Value: 3Meets Expectations: 3Chemistry was one of my least favorite classes in high school. I didnt care much more for it when I helped successive children through it in their high school years. I think this is why I struggled to read the Trim Healthy Mama Plan. It felt like chemistry class.
Dont get me wrong. The teachers for this class are friendly and entertaining. They want their students to succeed. But the material is still chemistry. Its not what you eat or how much, but how you combine it: meats with veggies but never potatoes, fruits with grains, etc. Several chapters in I was still struggling to understand what foods I could safely serve together without forever ruining my familys health and metabolism.
Then I realized that my family is healthy right now, and I wondered if God really meant for meal preparation to be so complicated. I put the book away. I may use it as a reference from time to time, and Im interested in trying some of Pearl and Serenes recipes, but the plan as a whole is too complex. Everything in moderation (except for gluten, soy, and dairy) works for me.
Waterbrook Multnomah Publishers sent me a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
CherylProspect,KYAge: 45-54Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5The latest Trim Healthy MamaSeptember 25, 2015CherylProspect,KYAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 4As women, most of us have tried at least one diet--and failed. Many of us have tried more than we can count--and failed. I am not certain that God created us to deprive ourselves of any of the foods he put on the earth for us to enjoy and to nourish us, even the occasional yummy dessert. Healthy eating and staying trim is a lifestyle choice and there are certain "rules" to follow that will permit us to enjoy all that God has given us, just not necessarily in one meal. The authors base this plan on Biblical principles as well.
Three years ago, Pearl Barrett and Serene Allison (sisters) self-published Trim Healthy Mama, never dreaming it would be read by the masses. I have seen my sister successfully use the principles within that volume to slim down and keep the weight off, just from following the advice within. Basically, there are two different food types, those which are satisfying (less carbs and uses fat as the primary fuel) and those which provide energy (have more carbs and offer glucose as the primary food source. All are permissible but not all should be eaten together in the same meal.
When I first saw this edition, I thought it was a new book and it is in some ways. It is less than half the bulk of the first and about half the price. However, if you want to have recipes to accompany your new eating lifestyle, you have to purchase the Trim Healthy Mama Cookbook. Now, don't misunderstand, there is some new information in the Trim Healthy Mama Plan but, for the most part, the original is divided into two volumes. It works. Now your book with the basics of the plan isn't getting splattered with your cooking. There are a number of menus included in Trim Healthy Mama Plan, just not the recipes. A lot of the sister banter between the two is also not included in this new edition which I think adds to the first volume but this newer one serves its purpose. Apparently, there were others who don't feel as I do and didn't care for the snippet editorials included in the original. This volume is more affordable and can stand alone without the recipes. It is far less bulky. So, to make a long review shorter, I like it. I think I will stick with my original dog-eared, well-loved, underlined volume for my own library and share this one but I do like it and think it will appeal to even more because of the affordability and smaller size.
I did receive this book free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I was in no way obligated to write a positive one.
