Series: Secrets On Sterling Street
Ruby McCoy is haunted by her father's sins.... When Ruby McCoy arrives in Fairplay, her ornate carriage is followed by an entourage who heft steamer trunks, hatboxes, and traveling bags into the hotel where she has booked the entire second floor. Upon her notorious gangster father's death, the now-wealthy Ruby, hiding under her mother's maiden name, set out to right her father's wrongs. Ruby is determined to spend every penny of her inherited "blood money" on those who paid the price for her father's crimes. Sheriff Rex Truett doesn't trust Ruby and doesn't care who knows it. The keeper of Fairplay's law and order makes it his business to find out why a stranger, especially a beautiful, spoiled, rich, female stranger, would set up businesses, donate to schools, hire workmen to rebuild houses, and provide access to the best medical care. But when a typhoid epidemic sweeps through the city, he is forced to reconsider. Will Rex blame Ruby for her father's sins? Or will he accept the possibility that she is trying to create and feel the peace her father stole?
Once upon a time, best-selling author Loree Lough literally sang for her supper, performing before packed audiences throughout the Midwest. Now and then, she blows the dust from her 6-string to croon a tune or two for her grandkids or to sing at weddings or funerals, but she mostly just writes. Over the years, her stories have earned hundreds of industry and Readers' Choice awards and 4- and 5-star reviews.Loree has nearly five million copies of her books in circulation, and in March 2014, she added her hundredth published book to the shelves. She has written fiction and nonfiction for kids and adults (2,500-plus articles and 68 short stories), and four of her novels have been optioned for movies. To date, there are almost 66,000 letters in her "Reader Mail" file, and she has answered every one, personally. (A carton of books is on its way to Corinna P. of San Antonio, Texas, for writing the 65,999th letter. Corinna said she plans to donate the books to her local library!) Loree loves sharing learned-the-hard-way lessons about the craft and the industry, and her comedic approach to teaching makes her a favorite (and frequent) guest of writers' organizations, book clubs, private and government institutions, and college and high school writing programs in the U.S. and abroad. A writer who believes in "giving back," Loree dedicates a portion of her income to Soldiers' Angels, Special Operations Warrior Foundation, and several other worthwhile organizations (see the "Giving Back" tab at her Web site, http://www.loreelough.com, for a complete list). She splits her time between a tiny home in the Baltimore suburbs and an even tinier cabin in the Allegheny Mountains, where she continues to perfect her Critter Tracks Identification skills. She shares her life with her real-life hero, Larry, who rarely complains, even when she adds yet another item to her vast collection of "wolf stuff."

Set in the late 1800s, it is a story of secrets, righting wrongs, trust, faith, family and love. Rich scenery, historically accurate detail and well-developed characters make the book a winner. It is Book 3 in the Secrets on Sterling Street series, but can be read as a stand-alone novel. I definitely plan to read more books by this author.

The characters alone were so well written that I wished I could meet them in real life! This author has a gift for smooth and captivating story telling. Ruby feels immense guilt and cannot rest until she has tried to fix the sins of her father. Rex just wants a peaceful town and is convinced Ruby has something up her sleeve. I didnt like Rubys mom at first but boy did she grow on me! Another gift of this author to make us feel emotions towards the characters. The two little ones with Rex just stole my heart! I didnt want this story to end at all. I now need to find other stories by this author and dig in!
I was given the book by Bookfun.org. All opinions are my own.
Pam Graber5 Stars Out Of 5Deception to Do GoodMarch 28, 2017Pam GraberQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 0Ruby McCoy-Lundgrens first clue that her life was a lie was when she and her mother, Cordelia, were visited by her fathers lawyer. His visits werent all that unusual; he came the first of every month like clockwork, after all. What was unusual was it was the end of the month and he was obviously very nervous. Ruby is stunned to hear that the Papa she knew as loving but stern had been hung in Baltimore for robbing a bank and killing four people in the process. She is even more stunned to receive the word that she, not her mother, has been left in charge of his considerable estate ill-gotten gains from a life spent robbing and killing others.
Ruby decides to undertake what her mother calls, The Healing Hearts tour, dropping her fathers last name and visiting towns he and his gang had decimated in their greed, and repairing or replacing any damage she could using the money he left to her. On the final leg of her journey, Ruby and company roll into Fairplay, Colorado intent on making amends. She begins by purchasing the derelict Gerard Estate and gently giving away as much as she can to others who have need. She looks for whatever she can do to make life better for the citizens of the town establishing and donating books for a library, digging a landfill, razing and rebuilding buildings that her father burned. No matter what good she does, though, she still feels unworthy of true friendship.
Suspicious of the newcomers to his town, Sheriff Rex Truett cant believe that anyone would throw their money around like Ruby McCoy is doing without getting anything in return. Whats in it for her? The more he watches Ruby in action, the deeper his heart falls for her. Can he convince her to make Fairplay her LAST stop? Will he WANT to convince her when he learns the secret shes keeping?
I really loved this story! Ruby has such a gift for seeing needs and acting on them. She amazed me often. I also felt for her as she carried the guilt of her fathers actions on her shoulders even though none of that guilt was hers. There were enough giggles as I read to keep this from getting too heavy. A sample of my favorite quotes is this one from Ruby, Lord, if the day ever comes when Mama doesn't embarrass me all the way to my toes, I'll know I've joined you in paradise!
Romance readers will enjoy Ruby and Rexs story and readers who enjoy some history in their books will also enjoy this. Ive read Loree Loughs books before, mostly in the Love Inspired line, so I knew her writing style is one I enjoy. I definitely recommend this.

jacquiRIllinoisAge: Over 65Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Healing of the HeartMarch 25, 2017jacquiRIllinoisAge: Over 65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Healing of the Heart by Loree Lough is book three in the Secrets on Sterling Street series. A heart-warming, sweet romance set in the late 1800's, complete with a lovely heroine and a strong, handsome sheriff and a supporting cast of very appealing and endearing characters. Each of the main characters is overcoming the past and the shadows that haunt their present. Each has suffered loss and heartache. Ruby McCoy is trying to right the wrongs of her outlaw father, and Sheriff Rex Truett is meting out justice and keeping law and order because of his father's violent death. Their pasts intersect in the present, and hidden secrets finally, but slowly, surface.
The great dialogue and picturesque descriptions enhance the entertaining plot. Those who enjoy historical fiction will appreciate this novel. I recommend this delightful romance with a message about forgiveness and overcoming one's past. I received this book through TBCN in exchange for an honest review.

Most of the story takes place in a small town, Fairplay, Colorado.
