I was given this book by a dear friend who had lost her mother to cancer after my brother was killed suddenly in an accident. The short meditations are often spot-on with what we are feeling and going through, always gentle and hopeful, and accepting of where you are at the moment, never preachy. I got a copy for my parents, who loved it, and we also bought copies for my sister, my brother's wife, and adult stepson so we can be reading the same things on the same day, even though we are far apart. We bought the copies used, and as a testament to the quality of the writing it is clear that each book was read all the way through (creases in the bindings). Grief is such a long journey-- it's hard to drag your friends along, calling them months later with, "I'm unbearably sad today," when we all know there is nothing they can do to take it away. Having a little book, written by someone who has been through a sudden tragic loss, is very helpful. A little morsel every day is a reminder that we're not alone. This is not an exclusively Christian book though it does contain scripture, and would be an appropriate and accessible comfort for someone who is not religious.

while the book does provide many Christian meditations, it also includes hindu proverbs, chinese proverbs, many unbelievers quotes, traditional prayers from many cultures, and muslim scripture. if you are looking for a resource that draws comfort and guidance from Gods Word, this is not for you.

June 26th says "maybe the spirits of the dead hover close" this isnt what the bible says and I've heard too many "Christians" say their dead relative spoke to them. I was going to get this for my sister who just lost her husband, but not now. people need truth & Jesus as their comfort, not lies just to make them feel good

Bought this for a friend experiencing sudden loss, and who does not have a strong faith life. I liked the variety of daily readings/devotions and thought it might be a help for her.
