I ordered two of these Hand sized HCSBs in anticipation of the new CSB bible introduction. I understand that the CSB is a totally new translation and will be replacing the HCSB. I really like the HCSB translation and picked up two more of these bibles since my old one which I bought several years ago had a lot of use and thus wear on it.
The quality of these last HCSB bibles have really went down as the HCSB nears the end of production. My old one was a terrific value and the quality was very good for a inexpensive bible. These had very poor gold gilding on the page edges. Looked like there might have been finger prints before the gold was applied. It was also scratched several places. The gold on one had oversprayed onto the front cover of one of the two.
The covers on both were damaged by some long lines running across the covers. Not very deep but noticeable on one and more so on the other. Very poor quality control.
Lastly the spine printing of the Holy Bible and HCSB etc was off center. I think Holman is not going to make any more of this fine translation and are selling the tail end of some poor production just to move them on out the door. This might be reinforced but the fact that I tried to order one of the black and gray and they only had the tan and brown. So I think it might be the end of the road for the HCSB. I will miss this fine translation and I will miss the quality that I had on my first HCSB hand sized bible.
This is a really great looking bible (black and grey). The print size is fine, but it is more along the lines of a large print bible. Definitely NOT Giant print. As other's have commented, the quality of the construction is not so good. The binding does not lay flat. When they sewed the pages together, they flexed the pages and were not sewn flat so it's difficult to open and not have ripples where the pages meet. Unfortunately, that makes it NOT a bible I want to pick up and read. I have a Tyndale NLT compact size bible that I love to open and read. It lays flat and the print size is just a little smaller than this bible's even with the Tyndale bible being much smaller. I'd say pass on this one. It's a good size (Hand size) to hold, but since it doesn't lay flat, it's uncomfortable to use.
This is the second Hcsb Bible that I've purchased. I must say that the quality of the craftsmanship is somewhat better than the other but not by much. This particular bible has a lifetime guarantee that I will have to use because the binding pages that are glued inside are splitting from the sewn seam. The pages are wrinkled throughout the bible which makes me wonder what company they are getting it from because it is very poor quality. The sewn binding it botched and can be seen on the side of one of the front pages. I don't understand the raving reviews about this particular bible unless it is for the translation itself and not the craftsmanship.
