This Bible is just the right size and the font is very easy to read. It's attractive looking and I like the magnetic flap that closes it. The HCSB is easy to understand while being accurate. This Bible is a pleasure to read.
I stockpiled these Saddle Brown Bibles cheap from CBD for family and gifts. It's like a reader's Bible with mini helps; pericopes (passage titles), a few cross references per paragraph, 8 page bullet glossary and a 14p topical index, but no word concordance. Big Bible text, but small end-of-paragraph crossrefs and footnotes. For comparison, the ultrathin HCSB has smaller print, full center column crossrefs and a 56p concordance. The HCSB is a modern smooth read with a mix of word-for-word and thought-for-thought translating. Great to study side-by-side with the more literal and traditional NKJV, which I highly recommend.
PROS: Handsome stitched cover and spine with gold gilding. Nice carry size, 8.5 x 5.8 x 1.3", slightly bigger than a Gideon Bible, but much smaller than a study Bible. HCSB has more extensive footnotes than the CSB, especially helpful in the OT. I rate the HCSB higher than the CSB because it is more unique (Yahweh, Messiah), more literal (slave), more footnotes, more gender accurate (him vs them), more deity pronouns (You vs you), 15 more verses (TR) and more definitions (bullet glossary).
CONS: Cover is not as durable as real leather, is stiff, doesn't stay open, needs breaking in. Small margins, little room for notes. Text has typical ghosting (see thru) and could be bolder and line matched. The unique HCSB 2009 may soon be replaced by the traditional CSB 2017.
We bought 3 HCSB LP PS RBs, brown cowhide indexed, ISBN 1586407929. 1 has half circle tabs, the others have larger rectangular tabs. The leather is semi rigid with a subtle grain, feels good. The color is flat cocoa brown, not dark chocolate. Expect some ghosting with the big serif font. Don't expect perfect gold gilding and tabs, room for notes, line matching or bold print. Look at the pics for page format. It's like a reader's Bible with mini helps; a few cross refs per paragraph, bullet glossary and a 14p topical index, no word concordance. For Bible covers, the actual measurements are 8.6 x 5.8 x 1.3", a handy size.
For comparison, the HCSB ultrathin RB (1586407465) has smaller print, full center column XRs, a 56p concordance and measures 9 x 5.8 x 1.2". Probably similar stats for the CSB counterparts. Holman Bibles last longer than glued, due to stitched spines, aka smythe sewn.
