Product Description

The Bible says, "Rejoice, again I say rejoice!" So why are Christians perceived as joyless and judgmental? Challenging the notion that God wants us to be holy and not happy, Alcorn draws on Scripture to dispel centuries of misconceptions and provide evidence that God not only wants us to experience contentment, delight, and peace---he commands it! 484 pages, hardcover from Tyndale.

Publisher's Description

Christians are supposed to be happy. In fact, we are supposed to radiate joy, peace, and contentment that is so unmistakable and so attractive that others are naturally drawn to us because they want what we have. And yet, in today's culture, the vast majority of Christians are perceived as angry, judgmental people who don't seem to derive any joy from life whatsoever. So why aren't we happy?

Unfortunately, many Christians are taught early on that God doesn't want us to be happy (he wants us to be holy). In fact, many Christians are laboring under the false notion that God himself is not happy. But nothing could be further from the truth! God does want us to be happy. The Bible is filled with verses that prove that ours is a happy, joy-filled God who not only loves celebrations but also desperately wants his children to be happy. Why else would He go to the lengths He did to ensure our eternal happiness in His presence? We know that we will experience unimaginable joy and happiness in Heaven, but that doesn't mean we can't also experience joy and happiness here on earth.

In Happiness, noted theologian Randy Alcorn dispels centuries of misconceptions about happiness and provides indisputable proof that God not only wants us to be happy, He commands it. The most definitive study on the subject of happiness to date, this book is a paradigm-shifting wake-up call for the church and Christians everywhere.

This is about the best book I have read in a long time. To see scripturally that our God is a happy God has been a wonderful breath of fresh air to my spirit. And to understand how I can daily be happy as I take delight in all that God delights in, things all around me has made me the happiest I have been in years.

I think this book is one of the most significant theological books in the English speaking world in the 21st century, especially in a world where the one who is informed must struggle with the apparently ubiquitous rise of evil. The Christian's heritage of "happiness" (joy, gladness, etc.) must be understood and embraced in order to be the "more than conquerors" we are commanded to be. John T. Tolbert (J.D., D.Min).

This book reached in and grabbed my heart. It makes a beautiful biblical case for the happiness of God and his people. As I listened to the audio I found myself smiling often and even laughing out loud at the wonder of our amazing Lord.

    Excellent book...

For too long Christians have given over this word and others to be used by special interest groups or to avoid due to fear of being misunderstood and this is a good step to overcome that for the word Happy, BUT

more than that it helps teach Christians to enjoy their relationship with God!

God didn't save us to be miserable but to enjoy serving Him and enjoy or be happy with the process of being prepared for Heaven and serving now.

    Good read.

Alcorn has done his homework on this topic. Unfortunately, it reads as though he included all of it without regard to any filtering. The evidence he provides for God's intent for us to be happy is overwhelming. I think I would have enjoyed this book had the author refined it to less than 200 pages.
