Product Description

In Like a Hammer Shattering Rock, McKenna looks at how the gospels originally affected Jesus' society and followers, and questions why these gospels aren't generating a comparable impact today with their original power and insights. These reflections encourage us to live the Word of God and allow the Spirit to drive believers and the Church to change, live, and experience the message in the still-vibrant, life-giving Word of God that is like a hammer shattering rock - and become that Word to others in the world.

Publisher's Description

Renowned Catholic author Megan McKenna celebrates her 50th book with a controversial interpretation of the Gospels of Mark, Matthew, Luke, and John and what they mean for the Church and society today.

In many ways, modern audiences have become so familiar with the gospels that we've stopped listening and integreting their wisdom into our everyday lives. Acclaimed author Megan McKenna explores the messages of the four gospels in the context of daily life when they were originally written and interprets their meaning for our modern world. While some argue for the development of new gospels for the 21st century, McKenna argues that we haven't paid due attention to the ones we already have; in many cases, we've ignored sections of these teachings entirely and twisted their meaning to suit our own agendas. McKenna breaks it down, gospel by gospel, and shows us how the lessons of Jesus's apostles continue to resonate.

Editorial Reviews

"Yes the gospels are truly a good news. Jesus today and yesterday is calling his disciples to love and to act in love. Megan McKenna's excellent book is a source of hope. She calls the disciples of Jesus to be a good news to the poor and the rejected."
-Jean Vanier, founder of L'Arche, an international federation of group homes for people with developmental disabilities

You may remember I struggled to finish a certain book I was reviewing. (It meant well but was just lame.) With this book, I've decided I won't feel bad about abandoning any I'm reviewing when it's clear the author's got an agenda that contradicts the Church. Megan McKenna's words are so plain that I can't stand to even publish them here, lest there be some misunderstanding about my own beliefs and intentions. I don't even like that McKenna's name will appear in a tweet of mine when this post publishes.

Page 66 is where I finally drew the line. I was suspicious immediately though, so I peeked at the book's bibliography: Hans Kung, twice. That's enough, really, but I thought I'd give McKenna one more chance (before I got to page 66 that is) and ask on the Catholic Answers forum.

I'd have been much better off choosing the other one I might have by Tom Peterson, founder of Catholics Come Home. To think I hesitated because it's "only" 160 pages. Live and learn, which is why I'm doing this, right? Maybe there's still a chance to get Peterson's book.

From now on, when I haven't heard of a book's author, I will look or ask on the Catholic Answers forum before requesting it. As for this one, I'll begrudgingly hang on to it until I'm sure I don't need it anymore for this review. But it won't contaminate the library shelf. It will be put in the recycle bin with no regrets.

On the plus side? I am publishing a week after my last post after all, which I had not expected to happen.
