Hake's Grammar and Writing presents a new grammar or writing concept every day with review exercises that allow the student to continue practicing concepts previously learned. The detailed lesson presentation encourages students to be self-guided throughout, with very little intervention by the parent/teacher. My three boys have all acquired excellent writing and grammar skills through the use of this program.
Kits include student text and workbook with 107 to 112 lessons; and teacher's packet with test masters and answer keys. Grade 4 to 8. From Saxon.
CheaSacramento3 Stars Out Of 5Quality learning even w/ typos & cheap paper.May 23, 2011CheaSacramentoQuality: 3Value: 2Meets Expectations: 3I've used Saxon products for over six years. I was pleased to see the Saxon Grammar series had the same concept as the math books. Continuity of teaching material is crucial for homeschooling. I was disappointed by the quality of paper in the book, as others have stated. I searched for a solid quality program for grammar, and Saxon does well, but I do have my complaints. First the teachers manual only gives you the answers for the multiple daily lessons. It does not provide details such as, directions to what the child is answering the questions about. It's awkward to have both the multiple students book and teacher manual in hand when correcting or going over the answers. Not to mention the numerous typo's (both in teachers manual and Students books). So many typo's I stopped keeping track. The number of problems per lessons, seems overly high, but on the other hand, practice makes perfect. While I'd recommend Saxon Grammar, I'd do so hoping Saxon corrects it's typo issue and reforms how it's books are made (cheap paper) and laid out, and less awkward to use and correct. I'd of gladly given this book four or five stars but It really needs some revamping. I'm a huge Saxon fan, and would love to see a good H.S. level book.

Others had mentioned that they thought the pages were thin, like newsprint pages. I did not think so. Nor would I say that the student text is consumable. I expect it will last, just like my Saxon math did, for multiple children. A quality product for a thorough education in grammar and writing!
SMAC5 Stars Out Of 5August 28, 2010SMAC1st impressions: I was disappointed with the paperback & newsprint type pages. Both student books are consumable & cannot be saved for another year. I thought I could do it by answering on a separate sheet of paper, but that didn't work. I was concerned that there were many pages assigned to 1 lesson; how my children were going to react. It takes far less time than anticipated. The grammar answers are in the teacher packet, but needs to be checked while looking at the student text. You can't call out the answers; there is confusion about what is asked: correcting capitalization, sentences, selection of vocabulary, etc.We love this curriculum! The writing program has been inspiring. The short 5 min. journal topics have turned into full page essays. I have boys; 1 an enthusiastic writer, the other loathes the pencil itself. Both now love to journal. The font is larger than most texts & there are many examples/explanation. I can see it without magnifiers! The review of grammar & vocabulary lessons, like Saxon Math, keeps everything they have learned current. No more regurgitating a lesson, dumping information, moving on, & cramming for semester tests. Everything taught is applied in their writing skills. Isn't that the purpose of learning grammar?Grade levels are comparable to ABeka, which we used for years. Saxon is written in a more understandable way for the student to be self-guided which requires little to no preparation. The positives far outweigh any negatives that can easily be solve. My students are learning, happy, & will be using this throughout middle school. I hope Saxon will address negative issues & develop high school programs.
Nicki5 Stars Out Of 5February 21, 2010NickiI am very impressed with the comprehensive nature of saxon grammar and writing. It is the only program I could find that I felt covered all areas of language arts (other than literature) thoroughly and intelligently. My 6th grader is learning things I didn't learn until college, and understanding them well. Sadly, Saxon chose to print all this great content on flimsy newsprint type paper. That won't stop me from purchasing this program for subsequent children, but it's at least annoying enough to mention (and to lose half a star over). These books weren't made to last unless handled carefully, which few children do. I'm also a little unimpressed by the layout of the teacher book, but with the addition of some labeled tabs it becomes a lot more user friendly. Overall, this is an excellent program. After trying several others, we've finally found one we'll stick with.
