ChristieParaguayAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Great for understanding Biblical principles of marriageMarch 1, 2015ChristieParaguayAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Whether you're looking to marry soon, newly married, or deep in the trenches of matrimonial bliss, this study speaks to where you are. Six couples you've probably heard of within Christian circles share about their own marriages on the DVD that accompanies the workbook, making you feel like you're all sitting around in a comfy living room while these marriage experts tell you personal tidbits.
The study guide includes passages to read, questions to answer in the group, and questions to answer together in private after that particular lesson. A leader's guide at the end of the book walks you through how to use the material in a group. Biblical principles are the center of this study, evidenced by the scriptures on every page.
This is not an intense, crisis-therapy sort of curriculum. The contents of Vol. 1 are great for understanding the foundations of a marriage centered around God and His ideas of living happily ever after. The videos really help to make the content come alive, and the questions that accompany each session make you think but don't open up the proverbial can of worms that might make for tense group get-togethers. I would definitely recommend this resource for couples who are starting out, who need a shot in the arm to fan the flames, or who are perhaps new to the faith and want to understand the Biblical concept of marriage.

UrailakOregonAge: 35-44Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Build Your Marriage on Biblical FoundationsMarch 8, 2015UrailakOregonAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4This DVD is the first volume of the Growing a Strong Marriage study series. I really enjoyed listening to all the interviews from well-known, respectable Christian authors/speakers/experts on marriage: John & Stasi Eldridge, Gary & Lisa Thomas, Art & Lysa Terkeurst, Chip & Theresa Ingram, Gordon & Gail MacDonald, and Les & Leslie Parrott. They share their own personal stories and offer insightful, practical advice. These marriage experts reveal that they are not without struggles and they, like any of us, still learn to love better. I appreciate their authenticity and willingness to share what they have learned in their marriage.
There are four sessions in Volume 1 (Starting Strong): How We Met, Moving into Oneness, Identity in Christ, and Paths to Christ in Marriage. This DVD and study guide present Biblical foundations of marriage. You will learn about shared vision, unity, identity, the real Enemy (Satan is our Accuser), communication, holiness, self-denial, prayer, and more. When you and your spouse realize that your identity and security come from God, it takes a tremendous pressure off your spouse and your marriage. The study guide by Amy Mcgowan is also wonderful; it's made for a small group discussion. It starts with a Bible verse(s) and it contains several thought-provoking questions to help you reflect and discuss after you watch each session on the DVD. The study guide also points you to the Scriptures for solid answers and encouragement to strengthen your marriage. Some of the topics covered include: what marriage is really all about, how to achieve oneness in your marriage, who you and your spouse are in Christ, and what a Christ-centered marriage ought to look like. At the end of the book, you'll find a leader's guide with helpful tips and suggestions. There are also blank pages for notes and prayer requests.
If you want to grow a strong and healthy marriage, check this DVD and study guide out. I highly recommend it for all married (especially newlyweds) and engaged couples!
"What is the purpose of marriage? Marriage is about two people becoming one. At the center of a healthy marriage is a unified vision centered on God. A marriage is comprised of two individuals who find their core identity in God, rather than each other, and who continue to grow together...The marriage relationship is not only a picture of Christ and the Church, but is also a place in which husband and wife are molded and shaped to be more like Him." (p. 39, 40)
"A Christian marriage is two people with their eyes fixed on Christ, devoted to joining in the fight to become more like Christ and to see each other transformed into His likeness." (p. 48)

RobbyeFayeAnniston, ALAge: 55-65Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Growing and Maintaining a MarriageJune 5, 2018RobbyeFayeAnniston, ALAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4Let's not kid ourselves. Marriage and love are hard work. They each require a constant daily commitment to dedicate ourselves to consciously affirm we love our spouse and are going to stay in the marriage. Starting Strong (Growing A Strong Marriage) Volume 1, is a great resource, regardless of where you are in your marriage or how long you have been married.
The booklet and DVD are best if used together, as they complement each other. The DVD gives us a peek at six couples beginning with their adult lives from when and where they met and through their marriage years. One couple, Gordon and Gail MacDonald, reminded me of my parents. The MacDonalds met, were engaged three weeks after meeting, married after only knowing each other for four months and have been married for over 50 years. My Mom and Dad met and married after only knowing each other for just over three months. Their marriage lasted 57 years and only ended due to my Mom's death.
One aspect of the DVD and study guide that will touch home is its teaching that marriages can go through three cycles-Isolation, Drifting and Oneness. It's so easy, as the couples recounted, to fall into drifting because of the busyness and business of life. This leads to a roommate type situation and sets the couple up for the feelings of isolation. I think the couples summed up the purpose of a Christian marriage well. Marriage is meant to teach us to love, to be holy and to model our role as the Bride of Christ.
Any couple, regardless of whether they are newly engaged or married for many years, will get a lot from this study.

Jennifer2 Stars Out Of 5Poor Choice for Marriage CurriculumJune 15, 2017JenniferQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0We had been researching foundational curriculums for our church's marriage ministry, and because of the reputable names on this curriculum, thought it would be a good choice. We found the format to be distracting and the only couple we consistently liked was the Parrotts. This was a group for leaders of ministries in our church, who have all led and been in multiple groups. The consensus was that this wasn't a great option unless you are newly married and have never been exposed to any resources on communication, marriage, etc. After 25 years of leading groups in the US and in other countries, including marriage seminars and groups, and using many different resources, this was disappointing.
