This is by far one of my favorite movies of all time. I remember the first time I saw Anne of Green Gables, and Anne of Avonlea when I was in high school, back in 1990. My mother had rented the VHS for us one weekend, but she unknowingly rented Anne of Avonlea, the sequel, without realizing there was a part one. Well, my sisters and I loved what we watched that day, and so of course we were thrilled when we later found out there was actually a beginning to the story!
Since that time I could not even say how many times I have watched these two in the series, but I know it's more than a hundred at the least (yes, I can recite every single line in both movies) :) Now I still enjoy watching this every year with my 11 yr. old daughter and her friends (and the moms!) when we do our annual AOGG girls fun night at our house. We have everyone bring finger foods for our dinner, and of course we have tea. A great movie for the entire family, and best of all it is CLEAN!!! I have even found my teen boys watching it with us at times. :)
The third installment, which was made over ten years later, is much different that the first two. The whole feeling of the first two is not in the third, and it is also not as clean. There is language, smoking, and "out of wedlock" content that you should be prepared to explain to younger family members. Nothing graphic for the eyes, just that a man that Anne works with has a young baby with his girlfriend. Anne ends up taking care of this young boy after the girlfriend is killed during the war, and there are times when Anne and this man (who is smitten with Anne) get a little too close while Anne is married to Gilbert and he is away at war. It was actually a good opportunity to teach my kids about temptation, and how it could and does affect everyone around you if you choose to give in to it.
Overall, the third movie was ok, it just did not seem to fit with the first two and that's why I did not like it as much. My rating here is for the first two movies Anne of Green Gables, and Anne of Avonlea. Highly recommend!!
Oh and P.S.
Note to Kevin Sullivan ~ I've been seeing a few polls here and there about who would make a good replacement for Anne or Gilbert should someone attempt a remake..... PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not even think about trying to re-make this timeless classic. You perfected it the first time around, no need to try and fix what isn't broken. :) Just sayin....
Anne of Green Gables will make you laugh, cry, and bring a smile to your face. It is a wonderful story about love, following your dreams, and how one person can touch so many lives in such an amazing way! I guaranteed you will not be disappointed in these movies!
I absolutely love these movies!!! Especially cause they are family friendly. My kids & I watch the whole set over one weekend. It was great!!! I would definately recommend these movies, to family, friends or anyone that want to watch a great movie!
