Publisher's Description

When Alyssa Denham, a single career woman, wins a fun getaway for two on Mackinac Island where her grandmother lives, she gives her carefree best friend a call. Together, they tour the old shops and hidden treasures of the quaint island while helping Alyssa’s grandmother piece together an heirloom quilt. Their quest gains them entrance into the homes of many longtime residents of the island, parts of the city that are otherwise off limits to tourists. As the quilt’s story takes shape, Alyssa gains amazing insight into her grandmother’s life . . . and attracts the attention of the handsome Scott Whitman, an island resident in charge of hotel transportation. Will memories of her past keep Alyssa from letting go? Or will the quest to piece together the heirloom quilt restore Alyssa’s fractured heart—and bring healing to her entire family?

Alyssa Denham has won a romantic trip for two to the Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island. Shes taken her childhood best friend back to the island where her grandmother lives, and which she hasnt visited since she was a teen. The holiday gives her the chance to help her grandmother complete a quilting project, and to meet handsome local Scott Whitman.

The romance between Alyssa and Scott was nice but not compelling, and I didnt find it realistic. The story felt as though part of Scotts story (especially his faith journey) had been cut to make room for the quilt subplot, which seemed contrived. Alyssa spends her holiday touring around the island picking up quilt squares for her grandmother (which is the first puzzle: its never explained why grandma cant do this herself).

The second puzzle was how Scott always seemed to have time to transport Alyssa around (it seems a stretch to believe his hotel shifts never clashed with when Alyssa or other clients needed transport). There were hints of a secret about Scotts family that were never explained (and certainly didnt explain why he held down two jobs on the island), and the overall effect was unsatisfying.

The writing was solid, but I found it difficult to connect with either of the main characters, which makes it difficult to rate this book as anything better than okay.

Amber Stockton in her new book, A Grand Design Book Twenty in the Quilts of Love Series published by Abingdon Press brings us into the life of Alyssa Denham.

From the back cover: A fun getaway on a charming island may be just what Alyssa needsif only she can let go of her past.

Fifteen years ago, Alyssa Denham stopped taking her annual summer trip to Mackinac Island, refusing to tell anyone the real reason she avoided the island she loved as a child. Now here she is, unexpectedly on the island for two weeks with her best friend, Libby, trying to keep her secrets buried.

Alyssas grandmother, who lives on the island, has asked Alyssa and Libby to help piece together a friendship quilt she had started years earlier. Their quest takes them to the homes of some of her grandmothers long-lost friends, giving Alyssa amazing insight into her grandmothers lifeand attracting the attention of the handsome Scott Whitman.

Will memories of her past keep Alyssa from letting go? Or will she finally learn to trust and let God heal her fractured heart?

One of the items on my bucket list is to visit Mackinac Island. I have been in love with this place since I saw the movie, Somewhere in Time, and the movie even plays a bit part in the book as well. Alyssa is a wounded puppy. Something happened fifteen years ago when she was on the island and she never wanted to go back for fear of her secrets being revealed. Now, because she has won a trip she has to go back. And her grandmother has something for her to do. Obviously this is not only going to force those secrets out but it gives her a chance for romance. This is a fun light romance that hooks your interest as you tour around this island with Alyssa and Libby. All of the characters are terrific and the plot is very enjoyable.

This book is another of the Quilt Series and again it is a good, fun read. I enjoyed reading this story it is about two friends that take a unexpected vacation because they won the trip from a drawing. The trip is to Mackinac Island and just where Alyssa the main character of the story has grown up. As the friends go to the island their adventure begins when the meet two handsome single men that work and live on the island. The story has romance, mystery from one of the friends pasts and keeps you wondering how this will end up.

I would recommend this book to women, I have read a lot of the Quilt series books and they always have kept my attention and interest. I really enjoyed this short read, it is one of those books you read when you just want to relax and enjoy.

I've been a huge fan of the Quilts of Love Series, not just because each novel is based around the story of a quilt, but because you get a chance to meet new authors who are taking up the challenge to add to this amazing growing collection. In A Grand Design, Amber Stockton, takes her turn in the 20th book to join the Quilts of Love Series. The best part about this series is that each novel can be read as a stand alone and not in any order which makes this truly a one of a kind collection and series.

In this one, the storyline involves Alyssa Denham who wins a two week trip for two to the romantic Mackinac Island. Alyssa is more than familiar with the Island, since her grandmother lives in a small cottage on the island, but she hasn't gone to visit her for fifteen years because of something that has kept her away and one that has remained a hidden part of her past. Yet it seems like God has the perfect plan to reunite her with more than just her grandmother. So with no romantic partner in her life at the present time, Alyssa invites her best friend, Libby to join her instead. Nothing could be more fun, than two glorious sun-filled weeks staying at the Grand Hotel, made famous in the movie Somewhere in Time and one she has been drawn to. Libby has vowed that Alyssa will find that special summer romance and the island offers just that opportunity to make that happen.

When Alyssa meets with her grandmother, she is given a task to gather quilt blocks from the friends her grandmother made when they established a quilting bee so many years ago on the island. Now in order to create her own memory quilt, she needs Alyssa and Libby to go around and bring the quilt blocks back to her so she can put them together in a beautiful quilt. Knowing there is no cars on the island, Alyssa's grandmother arranges for a carriage to take them to her friends homes all over the island, and it is owned by Scott Whitman, a young man who is more than enamored with Alyssa. Will this be the makings of something beautiful or will it only be a moment in time for them?

I received A Grand Design by Amber Stockton compliments of Litfuse Publicity and Abingdon Press for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions expressed here are strictly my own. I've seen the romantic movie Somewhere in Time with Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeve many years ago and have always been a fan of romance. Placing the setting of this novel right where it was filmed was a definite winner for me. From the beautiful descriptions of the hotel and grounds provides the readers with just the imagination to stir the longings of their romantic heart. It conveys that even though we carry around emotional baggage from things in our lives that have hurt us, we don't have to continue to carry them. We can learn to let go and move forward into the new life that God has been planning for us all along. I think Amber Stockton did just that in showing how that can affect our ability to move forward in the future God has planned for us if we are willing to take that leap of faith. I rate this one a 4.5 out of 5 stars in my opinion and literally inhaled this in a couple of hours. It was that good. There is even a Reader's Discussion Guide included at the conclusion of this novel as well as a sneak peek at Robin Caroll's novel Hidden in the Stars, another addition of the Quilts of Love Series.

Alyssa, the protagonist, is a single lady who feels that she will never find Mr. Right. When she wins a trip for two to Mackinac Island, she invites her best friend, Libby, another single gal. Libby has the sparkling personality, and Libby is the one who attracts all the good looking fellows. The trip takes place, and the ladies meet two handsome men. Now, the author describes both ladies as beautiful. (I know. It's confusing.)

Alyssa's grandmother lives on the island, is a wonderful cook, and a quilt is made during the two-week vacation.

There's not much of a plot. The characters are flat as pancakes. Simply put: I did not like this book. In fact, I found it tedious--a simplistic romance.
