Endorsements

Grammatical Concepts 101 for Biblical Hebrew has long been my go-to resource for both undergraduate and graduate students who want to see how the grammar of Hebrew compares to English. Dr. Long does not err by explaining Hebrew in light of English; rather, he skillfully compares the two languages, all the while maintaining and explaining their distinct properties. His work provides a truly helpful conceptual bridge between the two different grammatical systems. All Hebrew teachers should have this volume close at hand for easy reference to students; most teachers should assign it as a supplemental textbook.
-Robert Holmstedt,
associate professor of Near and Middle Eastern civilizations, University of Toronto

In the real world of language pedagogy, where students' knowledge of English grammar is patchy at best, this volume is a crucial counterpart to textbooks of biblical Hebrew. Lucid and accessible explanations of grammatical concepts and terms provide students with the framework they need to understand language structures. Armed with this deeper appreciation of English grammar, students will be better prepared to think about the structures of biblical Hebrew.
-Cynthia L. Miller-Naudé,
University of the Free State, South Africa

Grammatical Concepts 101 for Biblical Hebrew is one of two books on the market which seek to address the lack of understanding of the underlying rules of English grammar by the new Biblical Hebrew language student. The other one, English Grammar to Ace Biblical Hebrew, is reviewed elsewhere.

This reviewer began his professional life as a teacher of modern languages in a secondary school. Although all students had received training in English grammar for several years, almost to a person they could not recall anything substantial whenever a basic grammatical concept was introduced in the target language. I know most of my peers had the same results. English grammar had to be re-taught to students who otherwise were bright students. Most were studying a foreign language only as part of a college-preparatory curriculum, and were not particularly interested in the modern foreign language per se.

Later in life, this reviewer began teaching Biblical Hebrew. These later students had a specific interest in the language that was often missing with some secondary students. They wanted to read and understand the Hebrew Bible, but these students had the same problem with recalling their prior English grammar instruction.

Grammatical Concepts 101 for Biblical Hebrew is an excellent source for the beginning Hebrew student, although the first few pages, "Linguistic Hierarchies," and the last sections on "Semantics" and "Discourse Analysis" would be of interest to more advanced students than the beginner.

The rest of the book is solid, however, and the grammatical concepts are presented with examples both in Hebrew and English.

Since the ability to read Hebrew is assumed by the examples in the text, this book seems best suited for use as an adjunct to the regular Hebrew grammar.

The beginning student will gain a great deal from this book.
