Tell us a little about yourself. My experience as an English teacher and department head in the Philadelphia Public Schools spans 30 years. I hold a doctorate in curricululm theory and development from Temple University and currently work as a student teaching supervisor, grades K-12. I'm also a freelance writer who has written two interactive prayer books for teenagersHi, God, It's Me: E-Prayers for Teenage Boys and Hi, God, It's Me: E-Prayers for Teenage Girls. A book about bullies, Blue Cheese Breath and Stinky Feet (Magination Press: American Psychological Association), will come out next summer. Currently, I'm working on a prayer book for mid-life women and a parenting book about increasing verbal intelligence.
What was your motivation behind this project? I wanted to make grammar accessible to students ranging in age from pre-teenagers to adults. I also wanted to write a user-friendly book that homeschooling parents would enjoy working on with their children. I used a lot of the same techniques that worked for me in the classroom. I included the teacher's guide to give teachers and parents extra suggestions for implementing the lessons.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? I hope they will see that grammar is a means to an end (good speaking and writing) and not an end in itself. I want students to feel confident in getting a grip on grammar, punctuation, and writing and to have fun doing it. An important part of this book is family involvement and character development, two things I believe are important for any successful lesson or educational endeavor.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? I've always been inspired by William Shakespeare, who has dealt with every human struggle in his plays and has taught us some memorable lessons in a way that contemporary TV and movies never could.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: I believe that children learn best by simple, clear explanations and that learning must be fun. I also believe that character education needs be built into learning experiences so that children can grow intellectually and spiritually. Teaching students how to act and how to treat others should be a primary goal of all educators if we are to survive as a culture. But it has to be subtle, not obvious and overt if it is to succeed.
