Let just start saying WE love IEW - Mr. Andrew's Student Writing Intensive and other resources are wonderful. Unfortunately, this grammar books are not for us. I use this for my 3rd grader. Yes, only 15 minutes a day is a great idea. But my child is really not learning. The explanation of grammar at teacher's guide is really lacking even though I do have teacher's guide. I switch him to Easy Grammar which is a great resource for grammar. I also use Robin Hood for my 7th grade who mastered all grammar in elementary year, she doesn't like it either...

This grammar curriculum is OUTSTANDING! This year we threw out the traditional approach for Fix It Grammar. My 7th grader has always HATED grammar. She found the traditional approach burdensome, boring and ineffective. Retention of grammar rules was a major problem for her, therefore every lesson was approached with dread.

We just finished the first volume, The Nose Tree and what a game changer it has been! She has gained full retention of the content and she no longer dreads her grammar lessons. What a boost to her confidence. We also used this for my 3rd grader, who is an avid reader. He also approached the lessons with enthusiasm.

Traditionally, Book 1 was a bit advanced for 3rd grader yet a bit too elementary for 7th grade. That said, my 7th grader was not retaining grammar rules with the traditional approach. Now she fully grasps parts of speech and will move into Book 2 for 8th grade. By the end of Book 2 she will be at or very near grade level and enter High School with much greater confidence. My 3rd grader kept up with no problem but my only concern is if it will become too advanced for his grade level as we move through Book 2......We shall see.

Theses lessons are so painless that we doubled up on them most days, averaged 3 lessons per week and have finished by the end of March. I feel very comfortable taking a full summer break before beginning Book 2 because grammar rules are now innate and Book 2 begins with a thorough review.

If my children move into a traditional high school setting, I feel confident this approach can transition easily into diagramming sentences, as grammar rules will be well in place and they will only need to learn the framework of diagramming.

All in all, I can't say enough about how pleased I am to have discovered this curriculum. As for my daughter, she says she feels like she has been set FREE! Thank you IEW!

I highly, highly recommend this Fix It! Grammar Student Book! I currently use it as our grammar for home school for my 3rd and 4th grade daughters. Each day there is one sentence to identify parts of speech (add one part of speech per week), one vocabulary word to define, and finally, the girls rewrite the sentence with correct punctuation. At the end of the school year, they will have learned parts of speech, been exposed to quality writing, learned correct punctuation, and rewritten the entire story, The Nose Tree. This is expertly laid out-we spend about 10 minutes per day on grammar; it is perfect for our family, as I don't need grammar to be a "heavy" subject. My girls enjoy this series- HIGHLY recommend!
