The Grade 5Coral Level continues to help students master the comprehension process through lessons that hone in on written and oral exercises.

The Coral Textbook features six units that explore elements of literature such as plot, conflict, predicting, imagery, point of view, and other concepts alongside selections that demonstrate the theme. Sidebars provide "think about it" questions, definitions of unfamiliar words, "blueprint for reading" notes, and post-reading "Studying the Selection" questions that include a quick review, focus questions, and creating and writing questions. Unit wrap-ups provide projects that tie together the unit. Poetry and Journal segments are also integrated throughout.

The Coral Student Activity Workbook includes six workbook pages that correspond to each section taught in the Coral Text (not-included). Each unit includes two vocabulary exercises plus comprehension questions that include "in-depth thinking" and "drawing conclusions" questions and an essay activity entitled "one-step further." Finally, a two-page graphic organizer emphasizes the main idea and important language arts skill, and gives the student the chance to think about their reading visually.

The Coral Teacher's Edition features reduced-size student pages with teacher lessons and notes in the surrounding margins. Lessons background information on the selection, a summary of the plot, information on the sidebar segments in the text, "Guiding the Reading" questions that include both literal and analytical questions, and notes on literary components that appear throughout the selection. Answers are also provided for the "Studying the Selection" questions from the text. Answers to the Student Activity Workbook are also provided in the back of the book.
