Product Description

Robert E. Picirilli, in Grace, Faith, Free Will, renews the discussion of issues that have divided Calvinism and Arminianism since the Reformation. Jacobus Arminius, a Dutch theologian of the 16th century, contested the dominant theological ideas advanced by the well-known Protestant reformer John Calvin and his disciples. Historically, Arminius has been frequently misunderstood and often reinterpreted by friend and foe alike. Even today, one who calls himself "Arminian" does so with considerable risk, as the name means different things to different people and comes in various flavors. Many automatically think of Arminians as liberal, differing little from Universalists, at least holding to salvation by works, and possibly espousing heretical views of the Trinity or the goodness of man. In truth, some "Arminians" have held and even now hold such beliefs. Not so Arminius himself, his original followers, or able contemporary theologians such as Picirilli. Though he presents both classic Calvinism and Arminianism in order to help readers intelligently decide for themselves, Dr. Picirilli unashamedly advocates a very specific form of Arminianism as the best resolution of the tensions between the two doctrinal positions. In what he calls "Reformation Arminianism," Picirilli reclaims the original views of Arminius and his defenders.

This is an excellent text by a very capable scholar, well equipped theologically and linguistically for his task. Picirilli shows (again) quite conclusively that a monumental disservice has been done in the history of theology to that great Dutch scholar and gracious Christian Dr Jacobus Arminius (1560-1609), Professor of Theology at the University of Leiden. His courage in challenging from Scripture the dominant Calvinism of his native Holland eventually led to his vilification at the Synod of Dort, and the subsequent misrepresentation of his views for centuries, even to our own day. Picirilli, in treating this controversy in the context of a fine Biblical exposition of the doctrine of salvation, has given us an excellent book, marked by lucid exposition of relevant Biblical texts. Picirilli's book stands worthily with other recent and excellent books by Roger Olson, Jerry Walls inter alia. A "must read" for thinking Christians.

Dr. Picirilli's book is an excellent and well thought out defense for the theological thinking of Jacobus Arminius known as Arminianism. In this work, Dr. Picirilli argues for a return to the classical theology that Arminius built from the Scriptures. He begins by tracing the history of Arminianism and then he begins to look at the issues involving Arminianism versus Calvinism. The book is easy to read and each chapter builds on the others.

Overall this is an excellent work and will help the Arminian know their beliefs as well as answer those questions by those curious about what Arminians believe.

He did an excellent job on the subject matter. I gave it four stars, it's readable for people that are well read. But for someone looking for the basics, I think someone should write a text - Arminianism For Dummies.

This book fairly address both sides of the discussion better than any I have read. When dealing with this topic, this book I believe is a must read.

Very fair and clear when describing differences between the Calvinist and Arminian positions. This book is a breath of fresh air.
