jgsmum5 Stars Out Of 5Love this Devotional for Tween BoysApril 30, 2019jgsmumQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5As a mom of two tweens, I've looked at a lot of devotion books. Although at first glance, this devotional seems like a fairly typical one for kids (the format being 'bible verse, anecdote, questions, and prayer'), there are many things that make it stand out.
One of things that I immediately appreciated was how it focused on biblical principles as opposed to moralistic ones. The open-ended questions get kids thinking more deeply about their faith instead of just giving pat answers. For example, when talking about obedience and the ten commandments, instead of asking regurgitation questions like 'What is the second commandment?', this book asks, 'What do you think "keeping God's commandments" means?' and 'What do you find hard and what do you find easy about obeying God?'. These type of questions provide a great springboard for discussions with your child.
As a teacher by profession, I love that this devotional implements a lot of things that are currently being learned about brain development, such as emotional regulation, growth vs fixed mindset, and self-reflection.
It invites kids to engage in bigger issues such as their identity in Christ, how their actions affect others, and what to do with their emotions. It encourages them to think about what God wants for them and what parts of that are easy for them and what parts are difficult and why is it important?
As it touches on a wide variety of emotions such as joy, anger, grief, and sadness, it also addresses topics such as humility, patience and perseverance. It guides kids to where God wants their focus and loyalty to be and then uses short stories to illustrate what that might look like in real life. I also love that the pervasive theme throughout the book is of God's knowledge, love and acceptance of them.
The devotional is divided into 52 weeks with each week's daily readings focusing on one biblical principle. The weekend days provide a break to the regular format and have an activity instead. These activities range from paper based activities such as code cracking, prayer lists, making action plans, and crossword puzzles, to more action oriented activities such as making and using a chore jar to help other family members with the chores they like the least, doing random acts of kindness, going on a holy treasure hunt, and donating unused toys. One of my kids is more of a hands-on learner and he really appreciates the weekend activities.
Overall I highly recommend this devotional. I really liked what I saw in the preview and so requested a pdf copy in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. When I received the copy, I was not disappointed. My son and I have enjoyed using it for our devotion time together. -

I was a bit worried that he was going to lose interest, but he is still going strong. The Devotionals a very appropriate for this age group, and they are able to understand more because they can relate a lot better. I love it, and the most important part is my son loves it! Ann5 Stars Out Of 5Short and sweet for boysJuly 6, 2016AnnQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I ordered my grandson the previous edition. I like that it came with a spiral binding so the pages lay nice and flat when he works on the activities. Crosswords, matching, drawing, fill in the blank are all age appropriate and fun. Fifty two weeks of God centered devotions for students is easy to read and not too long to be tiresome for active boys. The language is simple enough to understand which allows for individual study. Each day begins with a favorite bible verse short enough to memorize and ends with a suitable prayer concerning the issue for the day. Talking and Walking with God, Making Wise Decisions, Be an Encourager; are all things I want my grandson to learn. The world with its lax rules and selfish attitudes and lack of humility invades their entertainment, their games, and their telephone app. Helping our children survive in a world that is trying to remove God from our schools and sports and public places by finding good Christian activities and books to fill their minds.
