Product Description

This volume 4 contains commentary on the Gospel of John chapters 1-10. These classic commentaries by Calvin laid the basis for later scholarly exegesis of the Bible. The commentary is verse-by-verse, with anywhere from a paragraph to a whole page of commentary per verse. This is a completely new translation into modern English of Calvin's Commentaries on the New Testament. Those familiar with previous translations have frequently discovered that these previous translations sometimes fail to reveal the close coherence of Calvin's ideas, miss many of his characteristic images, and often translate whole passages poorly or omit them altogether.

Publisher's Description

This is a print on demand book and is therefore non- returnable.

This volume is one of twelve classic commentaries by John Calvin, theologian par excellence of the Reformation, whose expositions of Scripture remain as relevant as ever. Edited by David W. Torrance and Thomas F. Torrance, these twelve commentaries on the New Testament bring Calvin's authoritative voice to life in clear contemporary English. The translations all strive to retain the close coherence of Calvin's ideas and characteristic images while remaining faithful to the Latin text — doing full justice to the Reformer's qualities as one of history's finest expositors of the Word of God.

Author Bio

John Calvin (1509–1564) was perhaps the preeminent theologian of the Reformation. Known best for his Institutes of the Christian Religion, he also wrote landmark expositions on most of the books in the Bible.

Editorial Reviews

J. I. Packer
"Here is one of Calvin's finest expositions, done into an admirable English. You will find Calvin, after four hundred years, still as instructive a commentator as anyone."

Jaroslav Pelikan
"I have long been convinced that we must begin to take the Reformers at their word and to read them as they wanted to be read, namely, as expositors of Sacred Scripture."

John Murray
"This translation will have to be accorded the tribute of outstanding merit."

H. F. Stevenson
"Here is scholarly, spiritual, practical exposition of Scripture at its very best."
