As a little boy says goodnight to the things and people in his world, he remembers to offer a thankful nighttime prayer to God. Goodnight Angels gently draws children to sleep as it reminds them that God is watching over them. It's a sweet bedtime story told in the classic tradition and filled with a spiritual heart.

NanceeGrand Rapids, MichiganAge: Over 65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Delightful Toddler Bedtime Book!March 12, 2014NanceeGrand Rapids, MichiganAge: Over 65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Goodnight, Angel is a precious story to be read to toddlers at bedtime. It's a wonderful way for a child to say goodnight to all of the things he might encounter at the end of the day. Also included is a brief prayer of thanks to God, helpful in instilling a bedtime prayer habit. Melody Carlson has done a wonderful job of reaching toddlers in ways they can relate to and understand. The illustrations are sweet and colorful. I highly recommend this delightful book, well written and meaningful.

mojoTexasAge: 35-44Gender: male4 Stars Out Of 5Cute bedtime bookMarch 12, 2014mojoTexasAge: 35-44Gender: maleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4As a pastor and a Father I am always looking for books and bibles to read to my two sons. I recently received "Goodnight Angels" from Melody Carson and Sophie Allsopp and immediately felt it was a "Christian rip-off" of "Goodnight Moon."
First of all, why do we do that? As Christian culture why do we feel the need to "copy" or to take our "inspiration from" the outside world? Our God is the creator of the Heavens and the Earth! Shouldn't it be "Christian culture" that sets the bar? Plus, whenever I see one of these "Christian imitations" I would hope or expect that it would be BETTER than the secular version, but 99% of the time it isn't. At most it becomes a "nice alternative."
That said and out of the way, the book is very cute. I love the illustrations from Sophie and it's fun to find the dog on every page. The story is also very cute as you follow the young man through his bedtime process. I am also glad that the prayer isn't focused on praying to angels as the title implies, it's only mentioned once at the end.
To be honest though, my son already has 2 other "nighttime prayer" books that are very similar to this. In my head it doesn't make this book "stand out" from those others and I wonder if the world needs another book that seems to be just a "newer version" of so many other books that have come before it?
Of course, if your son or daughter does not have one of those nighttime prayer books already, then I would certainly suggest picking up this one as it is very cute.
Thank you to Zondervan for this preview copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.
April EKSAge: 35-44Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Gentle repetition and warm illustrations!March 7, 2014April EKSAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 4I collect bedtime books. One of our family favorites is Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown. Most of our favorite bedtime stories have a gentle and soothing rhythm, comforting repetition, and cozy pictures. Goodnight Angels by Melody Carlson fits right in with our favorite bedtime stories.
We gave this board book to our son for his first birthday. He's a little young to fully enjoy the book. He usually flips through the pages faster than we can read them. But, our 3 year old daughter and 5 year old son both enjoy the story and I know he'll grow into it soon. My three year old relates to the book most, as we often encourage her to say goodbye or goodnight to the things around her as a means of helping ease the transition from one activity/location to the next.
In Goodnight Angels, a little boy says goodnight to being outside, goodnight to his toys, his snacks, his bath, his pets, and his parents before settling into bed. As he drifts off to sleep, he also says goodnight to God, thanking Him for the blessings in his life. Finally, he says goodnight to the angels who will watch over him as he sleeps.
The illustrations by Sophie Allsopp are warm and softly colorful. I love the details of a dog chewing on a slipper in the background, children's artwork posted on the kitchen wall, and toys scattered on the floor and kicked under the bed. Melody Carlson's text has a soothing rhythm and comforting repetition that young children will enjoy hearing as they settle down for the night. She has created another bedtime story to add to our shelf of family favorites. It doesn't quite compare to the classic and enduring nature of Goodnight Moon, but I like the Christian focus that Melody brings into Goodnight Angels.
