Publisher's Description

I simply wanted to step out of my ordinary life and find the Divine Appointment God had planned for me. I'd read about Mary Kinglsey, and it occurred to me that if I truly wanted to share an historical biography with my students, hers was it. So (with much trepidation) I booked the cheapest tour I could find to visit the Dark Continent of Africa. Who knew I'd meet a psychic named Vidalia (after the onion?)—not that I should have been surprised (after all, Bremen Tours specialized in "Voodoo relics of the Dark Continent," or so it was emblazoned on their carry-alls, one of which I owned). But life got really strange when I met a mad (or was he drunk?) professor, a dashing prince (or possibly, the villain), a village headman (the warrior king? Or the prince of thieves?) and a witchdoctor who was neither witch nor doctor, but rather the sinister embodiment of a charlatan who preyed on tourists...and let's not forget the man who started the whole mess'an embezzler-turned-kidnapper...of me! And that's not to mention floating down a river full of crocodiles, two boys who wanted to hold me for ransom, an earthquake, a cave-in, the leopard in my bed, and a pink hippopotamus. In the end, my Divine Appointment from God held mystery, excitement and a whole lot more. Enjoy my adventure, Dear Reader, because I did!

This story begins with Megan Jennings stepping into the past, figuratively, to follow in the footsteps of one of her heroes, Mary Kingsley. Megan has joined a budget tour to Africa to visit and learn about voodoo practices there. Megan figures she will skip that part of the tour and just visit the landmarks, cities and shops. She is a Christian and wants nothing to do with voodoo. A chance meeting in a café in Paris right before her flight to catch up with the tour in Africa gets the adventure started.

Tom Anderson is a film producer, son to a famous film maker and now professor. Tom receives an urgent call from Megan that his father is unwell. He drops everything to come to his aid only to discover his father missing and Megan with his wallet and passport. Is Megan the same woman he saw at the café in Paris? How can she be involved in his father's kidnapping? He doesn't trust her at first, but soon realizes she is an innocent bystander just trying to do the Christian thing by taking care of his father. Tom has only been a Christian for a year, but decides he and Megan have a divine appointment to meet and accomplish something wonderful and significant together.

After Megan and Tom team up, the journey and action never let up. There is always something going on either between Tom and Megan or any of a variety of other characters introduced throughout the story. The characters are a part of the story that I thought added depth. It was interesting to learn a few things about African culture.

I thought this story had an interesting plot, but it was sometimes hard to follow and a bit disjointed to me. I did like that Meg has a dream to travel to Africa, and she had the guts to follow through with her dream. It certainly doesn't turn out the way she planned it, but it was an interesting journey nonetheless. I thought the main male character, Tom, needed to be defined just a bit better as the "good" guy as I wasn't sure through most of the book if he was just acting like a Christian or really was one. I loved the character of the professor; what a feisty guy! I will be reviewing another of Lilly Maytree's books here soon titled, The Pandora's Box.

This book was very different than what I am used to reading. That being said, it was great! Meg is the main character and she goes through a great adventure while along the way questioning whether we have divine appointments. It has romance, comedy and adventure all rolled in one. This is the first time I've read a book by Lilly Mantree and I would read more books by her. This book was a very easy read. I would recommend it to everyone! I received this book from bookfun for my honest opinion.

Megan Jennings has great admiration for Mary Kingsley and her search for a divine appointment from God. An instructor at a local college Megan is literally following in the footsteps of Ms. Kingsley in order to provide an example to her students. Dressed in Victorian era attire she launches on an inexpensive tour of West Africa in search of what could prove to be her own divine appointment. As her flight is about to leave Paris she is moved to first class accommodations apart from her tour group, which she assumes is good luck on her part. This is one of many digressions from her charted course. Megan meets people of questionable character, but her strong and opinionated nature is her strength. As her digression from the tour leads her through dangerous yet picturesque African territory, Megan follows her instincts. Not knowing who she can trust Megan relies on her instincts in following what she believes may be God's divine appointment for her life.

Gold Trap is a fast-paced "trip" through uncharted territory! Lilly Maytree obviously has researched her story in great depth. Her characters are as varied as her main character's distractions from the charted path. Variety is the spice in this novel. The main character is involved in more far-fetched predicaments than one can imagine, but in following the adventures of Mary Kingsley the author's creativity is authentic. I enjoyed the distraction that this book offered me. I had no idea what to expect from this story, but the adventure kept me pretty well confined to my favorite chair!

This is one of the most unique stories I've read in quite a while! Meg, the woman who decides to follow in the footsteps of Mary Kingsley, is a funny, quirky lady who ends up in the craziest situations! The romance is cute, though I wasn't sure if her mystery man was a good guy or not for most of the story. It was interesting to see what a different culture there is in the parts of Africa she visited, but I want to see it even more after reading this book, though definitely not with a voodoo tour! I also liked her take on Divine Appointments and faith; it gives you something to think about. The story got a little convoluted near the end, but I enjoyed it overall. This was a new author to me and I plan on checking out her other books.

This book was like a breath of fresh air. It had quirky characters, romance, adventure, mystery and danger. It was just fun. I really liked how Lilly Maytree gave her characters such a unique voice in her storytelling. Another reviewer described this book as Jane Austen meets Indiana Jones. I would agree. The romance was my absolute favorite part. It was sigh worthy. I also wanted to state that it was a clever idea Meg had to bring history alive to her students. Read the book to find out what I mean. I also really liked the front cover. And the back blurb was probably the best I have ever read. This book is one of my top ten reads for this year. I will probably reread it many times. Lilly Maytree is a new author to me but I look forward to reading her next books. Especially looking forward to The Pandora Box. I was provided this book through bookfun.org and the opinions are my own.
