As a boy, Brother Andrew had always dreamed of "adventure", but little did he know just how adventurous God's plans for him were. The Iron Curtain that held so many out could not hold him when he was smuggling Bibles and encouraging the Church. God closed the eyes of the officers at checkpoints, God let rain fall so no one would see them unpacking Bibles in the car, God provided enough money just when it was needed. And so, so much more...

I don't read much non-fiction, but this was ABSOLUTELY GREAT! I could almost imagine the places he was describing, I would worry about how they were going to get out of this one. But God always provided. Fast-paced and insightful, this book is a true life story like not many other. I recommend everyone over twelve read it.

The Iron Curtain isn't there anymore, but God's Smuggler ends with a call - to the growing world of Islam. Open Door's website has more info on how YOU can help the persecuted Christians in the world.

Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die. Revelation 3:2a (NIV)

This review was written for God's Smuggler: 35th Anniversary Edition.
I came upon this book about five years ago for school reading; actually it wasn't even my school reading, it was my sister's, but I, being an avid reader, read it also. From what I recall, I loved the book, but that was 5 years ago. When you get older sometimes you read or watch something you once loved and think 'why in the world did I ever like that' that was most definitely not the case for this book. I have just completed rereading God's Smuggler and again absolutely loved it start to finish. Most people would say at this point it was so good I couldn't put it down, however the characteristic for a good book to me is one I can put down. Why? I don't know, I guess that's just the way I roll.

That aside I will tell you a little of what "God's Smuggler" is about and what makes it such a good read.

God's Smuggler is about a Dutch man who we know as Brother Andrew. This book was published first in 1967, during a time when Brother Andrew was still very active behind the Iron Curtain. This is the reason his full name is not given and so many other names are kept secret. The 35th Anniversary Edition was published in 2001; the main difference is the extended epilogue telling of what has been going on in Brother Andrew's life since 1967.

We start off in the book at Brother Andrew's home town of Witte, Holland. There we find him as a young mischievous boy who longed for adventure. It was that longing for adventure that drove him even as a young adult, and eventually led him to Christ. Not all is easy for Brother Andrew he, loses and gets rejected by loved ones but he also finds friends in the most unexpected places. Most of all he learns what faith in God can do. If we are in God's will, He will make a way even if all odds seem against us.

In so many biographies a person cannot relate to the character, as they were people from so long ago or sometimes the books display them as faultless. Brother Andrew of "God's Smuggler" is neither of these. Brother Andrew's work is still going on today, and he is displayed for who he truly is an imperfect human being. He goes through the same pain, and the same numbness and wondering "what in the world does God want me to do now" as everyone does. This is why when he was sad I felt sad, when something good happened in the story I felt excited.

I would recommend this book to anyone. If you are looking for humor, adventure, encouragement and, yes, even a little romance, you will find it in "God's Smuggler". Even if you're not looking for any of those things and just want, or even need to read a missionary biography, this is the one to read.

Excellent! The book is not only well written and captivating, it also is challenging to grow in one's faith. The demonstration of what God does in response to deep, abiding and unconditional faith is truly amazing!

This copy of God's Smuggler was written by Brother Andrew with John and Elizabeth Sherrill. This expanded edition includes photos taken throughout Brother Andrew's life and an epilogue of Q&A with Brother Andrew.

It's not often a book really inspires me or speaks to me deep into my soul but this is one of those books that do and did.

It is amazing how God can use anyone to do His work. It doesn't matter your education or qualifications; God wants a willing heart, devoted to doing His will. Andrew was a young man who wanted adventure. He joined the Dutch army and went off to war for a couple of years. He ended up having a bullet shatter his ankle. It took a long time to heal, but even then it hurt when he walked on it, no matter the distance. He realized war was not the adventure he was looking for. During this time of healing on a hospital bed, he found God. This is Andrew's story about the true adventure that only God could orchestrate, smuggling Bibles into communist countries.

This book inspired me, creating a desire to truly walk by faith, to seek God for all things. To let His Holy Spirit lead you and me in the way we should go.

I received this complementary book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

This version of Gods Smuggler is an updated and expanded Christian classic. I have not read previous versions, but am so glad I had the opportunity to read this one. It has inspired me, and I loved every minute of the adventure. In fact, since it arrived, I have read it twice.

Put simply, this is an inspiring and gripping adventure of simple faith in God.

Brother Andrew was born an adventurer. We get to know this about him as the writer shares some of his childhood antics, even against German soldiers during the occupation. When Andrew was old enough, he joined the Dutch army for adventure. However, it was not long until the pain and trauma of war overtook Andrew. In the hospital, he remembered the Bible his mother gave him and began to turn to the Lord. We get to see his journey of transformation as he comes to a full and complete surrender.

Then as Andrew began to grow in his new Christian life, God called him to a mission that fit perfectly with his personalitya mission of adventure, smuggling Bibles and encouraging other Christians far from home. Additionally, in this new and updated version we get to hear about Brother Andrew's meeting with Hezbollah, and also what he and the Open Doors ministry are doing today in the Islamic world.
