Publisher's Description

Salvation is from our side a choice, from the divine side […] a conquest of the Most High God. – A. W. Tozer

With words like these, Tozer shakes the soul. He crumbles the lies we believe and calls us to the more sure way.

In these pages, Tozer says what it means to truly be saved. It is not merely to assent to Jesus and go on our same old way, but to be conquered by the Almighty God and invaded by His Spirit. A saved person is a transformed person. Let Tozer upend you in this moving prequel to The Pursuit of God. And being upended, may you be found standing upright in an upside-down world.

Author Bio

A.W. TOZER began his lifelong pursuit of God at the age of seventeen after hearing a street preacher in Akron, Ohio. A self-taught theologian, Tozer was a pastor, writer and editor whose powerful use of words continues to grip the intellect and stir the soul of today's reader. Among his best-loved books are the classics The Pursuit of God and The Attributes of God.

This book is a testimony that Tozer cannot be accused of riding the fence when it comes to the cost of following Jesus. The Christian life is either/or, not anything else. Either a person is all for Jesus or not at all. There is no middle road. This is the main thrust of the book, or what Tozer calls the "essential interiority of true religion." He paints the picture of the God who is there as the starting point of his thesis. If our thinking about God begins with a false premise, then nothing that follows will be of lasting value. He talks mostly to those who ride the fence in their faith.

Tozer differentiates between a Spirit-filled Christian and just one who goes through the motions. He says, "Salvation must include a judicial change of status, but what is overlooked by most teachers is that it also includes an actual change in the life of the individual." (emphasis original) He goes on to describe the mystery of salvation from the human and divine perspective. The apparent contradiction between human free choice and divine sovereignty is "from our side a choice, from the divinea conquest of the Most High God. Our accepting and willing are reactions rather than actions. The right of determination must always remain with God." (emphasis original) This idea has baffled the scholar and lay person alike, but always falls back to the truth "that men become saints not at their own whim but by sovereign calling."

After building a foundation on the biblical concepts of God and salvation, he then constructs a theology of the Holy Spirit, who He is and what He does. His essential message of the Holy Spirit can be described as "deity indwelling men." And when the Holy Spirit takes hold of a person, the change is from the inside out to where the person no longer does what he will, but only that which God wills. This is the fullest sense of walking in the Spirit.

Do not be fooled by the short length of this book. It should be read deliberately and with great care. It is highly recommended for those who want to be challenged to live the Christian walk to the fullest. Not everyone may agree with some of Tozer's thoughts, but no one can read this book without at least thinking through its implications in real life.

I received this book free from the publishers in return for an honest review.
