MaryAnnORAge: 55-65Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5Martyrs Still Speak to UsFebruary 13, 2017MaryAnnORAge: 55-65Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This informative, factual book makes a good resource for every home. Read the stories of Christian martyrs through the agesfrom the first century to the twenty-first, from ancient Roman persecution to modern-day ISIS. Historically arranged by centuries, I found many familiar names and others Id not heard of before. The final (twelfth) chapter deals with Todays Global WarWhat Can We Do? and offer insights and prayers for various areas of the world. I found the text challenging and inspiring. The author has developed a series called Gods Generals. I would like to read some of the others. This one could have used another round of copyediting to catch all the little errors missed, and he left out Elizabeth Elliots second husband, Adison Leitch, making it sound like she only had two. I received this book from Book Fun Club. All opinions are my own.
nkwbookreviewer5 Stars Out Of 5Awesome Book about Faithful Christian MartyrsJanuary 29, 2017nkwbookreviewerQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5"Gods Generals, The Martyrs" by author Robert Liardon is Book Six in his series. This 415 page hard cover book was published by Whitaker House. Author Liardon has written a heart wrenching, inspiring book of faithful Christians. He tells of their lives and work for Christ. He also tells of their trials, struggles, and death.
This is an extremely we researched, planned, and organized book. I liked the author's style of writing. It is clear and concise, not confusing. He writes the true stories of various martyrs in this hefty book. Some people I am well acquainted with such as Paul and Stephen, Jim Elliot, William Tyndale, John Foxe, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Other people I did not know like Anne Askew, Polycarp of Smyrna and Gaspar Makil.
At the opening of his book, author Liardon addresses the present crisis in the Middle East and Asia that Christians face. Many Christians are being tortured and killed in places like Syria and Afghanistan.
This book is divided into different sections or parts. The parts of this book cover specific eras or years along with martyrs from each. Profiles and information on each martyr from that period is given along with facts about the time period. Knowing these are true stories, makes it harder to read the things that happened to children of God. The martyrs had a deep seeded love for Jesus and wanted to help spread His message.
This is an inspiring, thought provoking book that recounts the lives of those killed for Christianity. It is a book whose stories will long stay with readers. It would be great for a book club or reading group. There is so much information that begs to be discussed with others.
I would highly recommend this book. I rated it 5 out of 5 stars. I was given the book by Book Fun (The Book Club Network) and this is my honest review.
MaryMinnesotaAge: 45-54Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5A must readJanuary 8, 2017MaryMinnesotaAge: 45-54Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5"God's Generals, Martyrs," by Roberts Liardon, is the sixth book in this series. This book is a work of true stories that are displaying people of great faith. Some of these people lived in 100 AD and some lived in 2015. People have been being martyred for Christ for many centuries.
Liardon has done an amazing job describing the lives of each of these people. He uses heartbreaking clarity and descriptions. He shows us how these folks stood for Christ, and refused to back down, deny Christ, even when facing their own, or their family member's death. Some of them were tortured, imprisoned, and then murdered in violent ways.
"God's Generals is a fact filled book showing the grace of God. We are reminded that persecution of Christians is an ongoing problem. Many go out in the world to share the Gospel and are killed (martyred) for their faith. Each chapter has some scripture verses in it and some positive reminders that God is always in control! I think this is a must read for everyone!!
I received this book from The Book Club Network in exchange for my honest opinion.
Deana5 Stars Out Of 5Martyrs of the WorldNovember 10, 2016DeanaQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Upon receiving this book , I picked it up several times to start reading it. I would read a few chapters and then as I cried I put it down. Each story, each person in this book did what many of us may not be able to do. They stood up for their faith in the face of certain death and were killed because they would not denounce God. The term martyr to me means standing up for your faith without fear , no matter the cost. I have read in the past about people that have been martyrs but I guess I just forgot that it is still going on today. Can you imagine going to a foreign land where Christians are hated? In this book are many stories of people who stood up, spread the Word of God and paid the ultimate price.
Just a few pages in, I read a story of a pastor and his twelve year old son who were taken because they were Christians. They told the father to denounce being a Christian and return to Islam. He refused and had to watch in agony as his son was tortured. In the end they were crucified along with several others. It was such a hard story to read, but it happens all over the world.
Throughout the book is historical names and more recent ones that have stood up for their beliefs. They have chosen to be missionaries and to spread the love of Jesus to all the nations. I was fascinated by all the stories and learned a lot about other countries. I loved when the author said we can pray for those who are in countries that are unsafe for Christians. At the end of the book the author gives insight to "the persecuted church and what the saints are enduring in different regions of the world." He also includes several organizations that need help . I encourage you to read this book slowly and take in all the information. I didn't realize all the people who had given their life while doing God's work. They are true martyrs and I will keep this book close by to remind me of their true faith. I pray that I too may always stand strong and not be afraid to say I am a Christian.
"Jesus told us that a servant is not greater than his master. And that there would be those who would suffer for His name's sake."
I received this book from Book Fun.org and the option to leave my honest opinion of it was up to me.
