5 Stars Out Of 5
Helps You Know God, Inspires Worship
March 13, 2014
In his book, God As He Wants You to Know Him, Bill Thrasher asserts that we can know God personally, not just know about Him.
Thrasher covers many aspects of God's character and nature, including these: personable, unchanging, all-knowing, all-powerful, holy, faithful and true, love, sovereign, gracious, and merciful. He shows what each aspect of God's character and nature mean to the reader both personally and practically, inspiring worship, and challenging areas of belief that might need to be adjusted to biblical standards.
This is is not a book to be ready lightly or in one sitting. God As He Wants You to Know Him contains deep theological truths, and while it's non-academic and easy to read, it's meaty and deserves careful thought and reflection. The book is very scripturally based and sprinkled with historical and modern-day examples.
I especially appreciate how Thrasher takes some difficult-to-understand and sometimes misunderstood concepts and puts them in everyday language for the rest of us. His explanation of "propitiation" is helpful, and His discussion of the difference between mercy and grace add to the beauty of God. Additionally, Thrasher addresses the problem of evil, pain and suffering in the world as well as any explanation I've read or heard.
I absolutely love the "Knowing Him" sidebars that take you a bit deeper or show you how to apply certain truths to life. For example, in chapters 8 and 9 the "Knowing Him" sidebars include ways to pray for wisdom and enjoying God's presence.
Other practical helps are included in the book. Tables scattered throughout help readers visualize some stark contrasts or simply see in list form some of the ideas presented. Other practical helps include the five prayers for relying on God's power in chapter 10 and ways to become a person of mercy in chapter 16.
If you're looking to increase your knowledge of God's character and nature, this is a great book. It's biblical and practical while easy to read, thought it takes time to digest the deep truths presented. I highly recommend this book. So many times as I read this book I ended up in praise and worship at the wonder of our great God and how He chooses to know us so
intimately, wanting to know us and be known by us.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher for this review. However, the opinions expressed are my own.
