God Gave Us Sleep by Lisa Tawn Bergren is another installment in her series of books for children explaining things like Christmas, Easter, and heaven. I was excited to see a book on sleep because as every parent knows kids don't like to sleep! So I tested this book out with my little guy. ;-)

This is a sweet, well-written story explaining the importance of sleep to little ones. It's the perfect bedtime read filled with adorable illustrations. My son really enjoyed this book especially the part about the little cub making excuses before bed. ;-) He kept giggling throughout that part. I think he was a little confused when the cub didn't sleep well because it wasn't explained very well. I had to explain it so he could keep following the story. But other than that, it was a great story about why sleep is important.

Oh, a note for Kindle readers! It's really not the best on the Kindle because you have to make the pictures big each time which can be frustrating to little ones. I would recommend buying the print version instead.

I was given this book for free from Waterbrook Multnomah in exchange for an honest review.

God Gave Us Sleep is a wonderful children's book to be read to very young children, or one that young readers can read to you - either way it opens up opportunity for wonderful discussions on why we need to sleep, how our thoughts can affect our dreams, and what happens when we do not get enough sleep. The main discussion goes on between Little Cub and her Mama. First Little Cub is playing with her friends and reluctant to come in for bed - this leads to discussion on why God gave us sleep and why we need to sleep. Next Little Cub goes through the very typical rituals of, "Can I have a glass of water?", "Now I kinda hafta go to the bathroom.", "Can you read me a story?", "Can you read one more story?", "Aren't we gonna pray?" This leads to discussion about how things that you think about can affect what you dream about and how trusting God can help us through that. When Little Cub gets too excited about good things she was looking forward to doing, she wrestles with sleep and ends up having a rather grumpy day. Her Mama is able to reiterate why we need a good night's rest and that evening, Little Cub looks forward to going to bed.

The illustrations are beautiful and the book is as fun to look at as it is to read. Another in a "God Gave Us..." series. I would definitely recommend it for a young child's shelf and have no doubt that it will become a favorite, not only for a child, but for parents and grandparents to take the time to share with a young one. One of the best things about these books is the valuable lessons you are able to get across with simple stories that children can relate to.

I received this book free from Water Brook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review.

Sleep. Such an incredible gift God gave us to restore our body. Doesn't every parent look forward to the time of day when they tuck in their children for bed? Not only because that means you, as a parent, can take care of some tasks that may have gone undone throughout the day but also because we can settle in for the evening and get some much needed rest.

Little Cub is having a good time playing with friends that she doesn't want to come inside and go to bed when Mama calls. Mama patiently explains the benefits of a good night's sleep, doesn't get angry when Little Cub finds every reason in the world to prolong getting into bed (sound familiar?) and then prays with Little Cub before leaving the room. But Little Cub just can't sleep very well and awakes on the "wrong side of the bed" making it a pretty miserable day. That night, she sleeps well and awakes with a whole new outlook.

God Gave us Sleep is just one in a series of God Gave Us books by Lisa Tawn Bergman. Little Cub is a constant character throughout and, in each, gains new insight into God's love. Each story has colorful watercolor illustrations, is hard bound, and the perfect length for a short bedtime story. The paper has a nice heavy feel and is slick and durable. I think each of these books in the series make a nice baby gift and will be adding this one to my next gift.

I did receive this book free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review and am in no way obligated to leave a positive one.
