Editorial Reviews

Gilt Hollow by Lorie Langdon What it’s about (from publisher Blink): Willow Lamott’s best friend is a convicted killer, and no one in the small town of Gilt Hollow will let her forget it. Over four long years, she’s tried to fade into the background---but none of that matters when Ashton Keller comes striding into school, fresh out of juvie and fueled by revenge. The moment their eyes meet, Willow no longer feels invisible. Drawn to the vulnerability behind Ashton’s mask of rage, she sinks deeper into his sinister world and begins to question whether he’s a villain, a savior, or both. Ashton thought he wanted vengeance, until Willow Lamott stepped back into his life. Now he longs to clear his name and become the person she sees in him. But the closer they get to uncovering the truth, the darker the secrets become, and Ashton wonders if his return to Gilt Hollow will destroy everyone he loves. Why you should read it: Driven apart by numerous lies, revealed at unexpected times throughout this well-plotted novel, Willow and Ashton hunger for the closeness and trust they once shared. As truths are revealed and faith in each other rekindles, danger grows to a quite literal white-knuckle conclusion you will not want to miss. Best known as co-author of the Doon series (with Carey Corp), Lorie Langdon comes into her own with Gilt Hollow. This atmospheric and emotionally driven novel is one part mystery, one part suspense and at least three parts romance. The author’s solo debut will pull you, heart-first, into the tale and keep you glued to the pages until you reach the pulse-pounding, heart-soaring end. Highly recommended! By - Serean Chase is the author of the critically acclaimed Eyes of E’veria series.
'Easily the most thrilling and dangerously addictive YA novel to hit bookshelves this year, readers of all ages will fiercely devour every word of this stunning literary win.”
Gilt Hollow by Lorie Langdon – Willow has spent the past four years trying to forget the day her best friend was convicted of murder. But when Ashton is released from juvie, Willow is forced to confront the past, as well as her growing romantic feelings for her once best friend. Ashton seeks out Willow’s help to clear his name, but the closer they get to the truth, the more Willow begins to doubt Ashton’s innocence. Why we’re looking forward to it: We need a heart-pounding thriller to keep us occupied while we wait for The Girl On The Train to hit big screens. Lorie Langdon gives us that. It may be YA, but Gilt Hollow had us checking in our closets and behind the shower curtain before bed.
Gr 9 Up–Langdon draws readers into a town riddled with deadly secrets and dangerous lies lurking in every corner, from the protagonists’ possibly haunted attic to the bustling coffee shop downtown. Threatening messages appear, and suspicious events begin occurring upon the return of convicted killer Ashton Keller. But is he really the true danger to this society? Meanwhile, Ashton’s former best friend Willow is barely piecing together a normal adolescent life following Ashton’s conviction and now sudden unexpected return from juvenile detention. Torn between her longtime love and loyalty to Ashton and her interest in dating other boys, getting through high school, and keeping her family safe and happy in the wake of her father’s death, Willow finds herself right in the thick of some very dark business. Filled with detailed descriptions of the characters’ physical appearances, this novel would be great for teens who want to mix some elements of danger and mystery in with their love triangles. VERDICT For those who enjoy the romance and drama of Twilight but would rather skip the supernatural sparkling and packs of werewolves, this could be a good fit.–Emily Grace Le May, Providence Community Library

I am so SO new to reading mystery/suspense books. I like to feel warm and fuzzy rather than creeped out and paranoid. But I AM trying to branch out more...and while Gilt Hollow IS an excellent story and talks a lot about forgiveness...there was not a lot of faith woven into the story in my opinion.

The writing was smooth and flowed nicely. And even though most of the book itself has little action, it was never dull or slow. Always something new to uncover, always one more piece falling into place right where it needed to be.

Although I can not relate directly to the circumstances surrounding Willow and Ashton, I can relate to the panic attacks (thankfully mine have gotten MUCH better in recent months) and to miscommunication. How many arguments, how much confusion, could we save by communicating efficiently?

As the story begins to take shape we start wondering "who done it?" and as I kept reading I really didn't know how it was going to end. I read this one super fast because it just sucks you in and page after page, chapter after chapter...you just NEED to know more!

The characters possessed age appropriate personalities due to the circumstances they landed in. And while the kisses (and yes...closets are involved...those are ranked among my favorite!) emit a good dose of passion, I believe the author kept it clean and appropriate for Young Adults.

If you haven't read mystery/suspense books yet but are wanting to get your feet wet in the genre, I do recommend Gilt Hollow. There are moments of pure creepiness and some gory descriptions...just as a heads up, but all in all a VERY well written book.

I received a complimentary copy of Gilt Hollow from the publishers. I was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.

This book is about a girl named Willow who is surprised to learn her old friend Ashton is out of jail for a crime he committed. But she thought he was always innocent and helps prove it in this mysterious book. As they uncover clues as to who they think committed the crime, they end up in dangerous situations because the real killer who I will not share, is wanting them to not find out the truth. This book had a lot of twists and turns that had me not sure of what was going on. This book immediately got my attention so I ran to get this book off the website and read it. I read the whole book in one day and the book is pretty big about 300 or so pages. I would like to read more books by this author if I get the chance. I originally thought this book was about ghosts and spirits but it wasn't. I thought it was about spirits and ghosts because of where the town and house takes place but you will see what I mean when you read the book. All in all I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone who wants a great book to immerse themselves in and just get away from it all and live in the book for a while. The book took me to another place where I got out of my life for a while. I was really pleased.

Four years ago, Willows best friend, Ashton, was sent to Juvenile Detention for manslaughter. She hasnt heard anything from him in all that time, though she sent him dozens of letters and defended his innocence to anyone who would listen. Now, though, Ashton has been released from prison and is coming back to their town Gilt Hollow for revenge against those who falsely accused him. What does that mean for Willow, who Ashton believes deserted him?

Gilt Hollow by Lorie Langdon was an interesting book. It is a YA romance and mystery, the characters seniors in high school and the story revolving around the mystery of who is really the murderer. The murder mystery part of the plot was very intriguing. Someone was framing Ashton for the weird things that were happening in the town and high schoola shredded football uniform, a robbery, and more. The characters eventually started working together to discover who was framing him, and their discoveries kept me in suspense throughout. The setting was wonderfully described and used to the storys advantage, as were the events and quirks in the town. I wasnt always sure what to make of the romance though. We have this young man bent on revenge and this sweet girl trying to survive high school, and it was cute how everything turned out. But there were times when I wondered, with the knowledge that Willow had at the time, whether she should want a relationship with Ashton at all. He seemed creepy and cruel at times, though some of that was just her perception of him without all the facts, and made me wonder about the healthiness of their relationship. Everything turned out all right at the end, though. The characters were perfect for each other.

I enjoyed this novel and recommend it to those who enjoy YA contemporary novels.

I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

That's the answer to the question, "How would you describe this book in three words?" Five Stars! Using more words could result in a never ending torrent of book love from yours truly... But lets give it a whirl!

Willow is your average girl, yet she's got some serious issues. Ashton is at the root of those issues, or is he? When he comes walking back into her life, it's like dynamite. And I don't just mean that because their romance is so. stinking. swoony. Gilt Hollow is a thrilling mystery! Each time I picked up this book, I was sucked into the story. All of a sudden, a hundred pages had been turned. And I desperately craved more!

Like I said, the romance was total swoonsville. The thrill resembled the first drop of a roller coaster. The mystery was intoxicating. While there's always someone who can spot the Big Twist, I doubt anyone could anticipate every twist in this mysterious beauty. Highly recommend!

*Reminder* Books published under the Blink imprint are intended for a general readership without being overtly Christian. My more conservative readers should note that there is a little bit of language, and eccentric is an understatement for this town and her inhabitants. However, what I found between these pages were two people struggling to find the truth in the midst of their darkness, and find it and God in the process.

Lorie Langdon is co-author of the popular (read fantastic) Doon series. Gilt Hollow is her first solo novel. Read. Them. All.

I received a copy of Gilt Hollow by Lorie Langdon published by Blink from BookLook Bloggers. All opinions expressed are my own.

Wow-I'm not sure where to begin with Gilt Hollow. First of all, it's obvious Lori Langdon poured her heart into her writing. She's created a funky college town as a perfect setting for the town of Gilt Hollow. Her characters are vibrant and deep. And the story left me breathless at times. All of that being said, it's been awhile since I've read young adult literature. I was somewhat surprised to find a sprinkling of curse words and a few heated kissing scenes since I received this book from a Christian publisher (Blink, Zondervan). I'm not going to get on my soapbox, but felt the cursing wasn't necessary and the kissing scenes could have been toned down. I was pleased with the theme of forgiveness and how it played out including some references to God. The book is written for older teens (15+) and deals with violent circumstances and teen romance. Lorie is also the co-writer of the Doon series. I received Gilt Hollow in exchange for a fair review.
