Author/Artist Review

Tell us a little about yourself.  I teach high school English in Special Education at Armijo High School in Fairfield, CA. I have been actively involved in local community theater and in drama productions at my church. Currently, I am engaged in a ministry to the elderly in two nursing homes in Vacaville. I love to travel. I am a huge fan of movies. I also collect Oz books and am an active member of the International Wizard of Oz Club. Writing is the most important of my creative activities. I have written novels, short stories, and plays, and have plenty of projects in the works.

What was your motivation behind this project?  I wanted to find a book on the childhood of St. Nicholas, and I could not find one--either biographical or fictional. I decided to write the story myself. Originally, I planned a slim volume that would summarize the legends and myths about St. Nicholas, but as I wrote, the story grew until it became a project stretching over six books.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  I want my readers to gain a life-changing experience in reading my book. I want their personalities and lives to be transformed. I want this book to be a touchstone for the fulfillment of every good, true and Godly dream that has ever been on their hearts. I want my readers to develop a more intimate awareness of God and His love through reading this book.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  Writing these stories has brought me in touch with what St. Nicholas was all about, which is generosity and giving. I believe that this creative work has inspired me to become a better person, and I am certain it will have a similar effect on my readers.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  My greatest inspiration for a tale of giving and generosity has got to be my Aunt Bobbe, to whom the book is dedicated. She is the living embodiment of the virtues represented by St. Nicholas. It is hard to choose a single favorite author, but I have been heavily influenced by the work of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. I hope that the story of Nicholas contains a similar feeling of wonder to that which a reader feels on reading the works of Tolkien or Lewis. I have also been greatly inspired by the writings of Stephen Lawhead, who has influenced me to turn to historical fiction. As I mentioned above, I am also a fan of the fantasies of L. Frank Baum, author of the original Oz series. I love reading and am constantly expanding my horizons through books.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  "Giftbringer" is only the first in a series of books chronicling the life of St. Nicholas. Four complete novels have been written, and more are in the works. Each book builds on the previous one, and each book tops the previous one in terms of quality and suspense. I write with a very cinematic eye, because I would like these books to be made into films...not ordinary films, but marvelous, extraordinary films like "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. One of my greatest dreams is to see "Giftbringer" and its successors transformed into glorious cinematic experiences. I know that once the general public is introduced to the characters in my books that they will find them as captivating and compelling as I do.
