Product Description

Derek Maul (In My Heart I Carry a Star) has a deep concern for men, whether in the spheres of work, family, or other relationships, and how they relate to their spiritual lives. To serve this vital part of the Christian community, Get Real is a celebration of modern Christian manhood. A true Christian man should be unaffected by cultural imperatives and its imposed values of power, acquisition and individuality, rather finding strength in a discipleship role. Short chapters address desire (where our treasure is), discipleship (putting ourselves in submission to Christ), devotion (how we worship God), and daring (living our faith) as Maul offers his life experiences to illustrate these elements that should be integral to a true Christian life. The offer of a true connection with God is real and available to any man, and Maul makes that clear in his book.

Publisher's Description

When faced with the impossible expectations of being a man in our culture, of being both tough and tender, sensitive and stoic, many men find it easiest to put up a false face for the rest of the world. Behind that barrier men can find safety from the pressure they feel. But the price for that safety can be high. When Derek Maul found himself behind that barrier with his marriage at risk, he realized that to be honest about his feelings, he would need help from other Christian men to stay grounded in reality. He founded a group, called the Men’s Room where he and others covenanted to pray, share, and support one another in their attempts to get—and stay-—real.

What Maul learned in the Men’s Room is that when men are able to get real about their spiritual life, they find it possible to share honestly with other men in a way that is authentic, brave, and energizing. Maul shares these insights for men and those who love them in this engaging and enlightening collection of essays.

Give this book to a man you know who needs to get real, especially if that man is yourself.

Tell us a little about yourself.  I write several weekly columns that run in the Tampa Tribune. My commentary and features have appeared in Newsweek, USA Today, The Christian Science Monitor, Presbyterians Today, Guideposts, and many other print and online publications. My mission, writing in secular publications, is to expose people to the Gospel who otherwise might not read about faith. I'm married to Rebekah Maul, a Presbyterian pastor. We have two children, Andrew and Naomi, and a son-in-law, Craig. At church I teach adult Sunday school, small-group ministry, and a men’s Bible study/spiritual formation group; I also play guitar in the Praise Band. I enjoy the outdoors, traveling, photography, reading, cooking, music, and golf.

What was your motivation behind this project?  To write a book that connects men to Jesus in a powerful way, both committed Christians and those who are on the edge of making a serious decision to follow Jesus. I've worked with men's ministry for several years, and there just isn't enough writing out there that encourages men in a deeper spiritual walk; especially men in "mainline" denominations.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  My prayer is that men will take steps to follow Jesus more closely, that they will be inspired and instructed when they read "GET REAL." I pray that this project will encourage men in such a way that entire faith communities will see revitalization. I want people to move from the periphery and into lives or authentic life-changing faith!

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  Spiritual journaling is powerful; I couldn't write about faith without being led into a deeper walk in the telling. Also, interviewing other people and learning their stories has helped me see Jesus in new and inspirational ways.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  The Gospel of John; Philip Yancey; John Ortberg; my wife - Rebekah Maul; Henry Nouwen; Don Miller... there are many more.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  Before becoming a full-time writer, I taught public school in Florida for eighteen years, including cutting-edge work with autistic children. PS. Please include a picture of "GET REAL" with your listing! Thanks - DEREK
