It it difficult to express just how comprehensive this 3 volume work is. I know of nothing like it on Genesis. While Westermann was of a generation very occupied with form criticism, there is so much to behold within the pages of this commentary that you can actually leave his form analysis aside and still be overwhelmed by the many exegetical and theological insights he offers. This is a monument to the first book of the Bible. Westermann the scholar was also Westermann the churchman, and his love for both worlds gave him a full perspective that few have attained. This work, especially volume 1, is a treasure.

This commentary by Claus Westermann on Genesis 1-11 is one of the most detailed exegetical commentaries ever, indeed, the whole three volumes on Genesis are something to behold. This commentary should serve as the foundation for research into Genesis 1-11.
