Product Description

Games for Reading is a brilliant way to help young learners engage multiple learning styles, providing a method to learn reading skills by engaging in what they enjoy most---games! Bingo games, rhyming games, puzzles, auditory-based games, visual-learning based games, and imagination-centric ideas are the perfect way to spark a child's enthusiasm for learning. Simple to implement for parents or teachers, activities have materials-needed lists with instructions and examples for each game organized by what reading skills they work on. Homeschoolers may interpret a sentence in the introduction as anti-homeschooling bias on the part of the author, or at least as a manifestation of thoughts on teacher-based learning in 1984; however, the intent of the book is for parents to get involved with teaching their own children to read. 213 pages, softcover.

Publisher's Description

Peggy Kaye's Games for Reading helps children read by doing just what kids like best: playing games.  There is a "bingo" game that helps children learn vocabulary. There is a rhyming game that helps them hear letter sounds more accurately. There are mazes and puzzles, games that train the eye to see patterns of letters, games that train the ear so a child can sound out words, games that awaken a child's imagination and creativity, and games that provide the right spark to fire a child's enthusiasm for reading. There are games in which your child has to act silly and games--sure to be any child's favorite--in which you do.

Easy to follow and easy to play, these games are ideal for busy, working parents. You can read a game in a few minutes and start to play right away. You can play on car trips, while doing the laundry, or while cooking. These games are so much fun for the whole family that you may forget their serious purpose.  But they will help all beginning readers--those who have reading problems and those who do not--learn to read and want to read.

Games for Reading also includes a list of easy-to-read books and books for reading aloud, and a "Note to Teachers" on how to play these games in their classrooms.

I have a teaching background, but new ideas can be helpful, and when you can make learning a fun game instead of a chore I feel everybody is happier. My just five year old, and even the almost 4 year old are both reading at a very basic level because of games like this book has. In fact, we have been homeschooling for 6 months, and they are just realizing when we are playing we are also doing school. This is now called play school at our house. I enjoyed the information I learned from this book, and feel it was easy to use. Some of the ideas even can be modified to include the almost 2 year old...and that makes everybody happy.
