40-day Lent devotional from a beloved spiritual writer
As for the field, so for the soul: "The neglected heart will soon be overrun with worldly thoughts." Careful cultivation yields a harvest, and the heart requires great attention. .
From the Grave, a 40-day Lent devotional, reflects on this critical spiritual dynamic. It features A. W. Tozers best insights on faith, repentance, suffering, and redemption. Gleaned from transcribed sermons, editorials, and published books, each moving reflection has been carefully selected for the season of Lent. It addresses themes like:
- Christs passion, death, and resurrection
- Mortification of the flesh
- Self-denial and cross-bearing
- New life in Christ
- Christian obedience and resurrection hope
Each day features a brief portion of Scripture for meditation followed by a reflection from Tozer. Together the entries take you on a journey from the garden to the grave to light of daythe "pain-wracked path" to life.
gram5 Stars Out Of 5Perfect!!February 23, 2018gramQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This is the perfect devotional for Lent!! Very meaty but in small amounts for each day!! My daughter is also using it as a Lenten devotional with her husband.
Contender1165 Stars Out Of 5Not Just for Lent!April 21, 2017Contender116Quality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Tozer's hard hitting message for Lent focusses on the death of Christ and how we are to 'mortify the deed's of the flesh', and 'die to self' on a daily basis. this, he says, is the key to Christian growth, by first dying to everything 'we' are, to gain everything that Jesus did for us in His death and then Ressurection. This book could be read on a monthly basis as this message is sadly lacking in the church today, and shouldn't be relegated to just Lent! Tozer hits hard and true... if you like your Christianity 'lite'... stay away!!
Daniele5 Stars Out Of 5From the Grave: A 40-Day Lent DevotionalApril 14, 2017DanieleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5From the Grave is a perfect daily devotional book. The daily writing is short enough for busy schedules but still encouraged my walk with Jesus. Love Tozer's writing!!
Gail5 Stars Out Of 5Great Devotional for this Easter Season and Year Round!March 28, 2017GailQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5From the Grave is smaller than the your average size book. I like the layout of the book. Each day is devotional in style, a verse followed by Tozer's writing related to the daily scripture. I am a Tozer fan, I like his matter of fact writing style and that he simply addresses the topic at hand. In this Lent Devotional, what Tozer shares is timeless, it applies as much when he wrote it as it does to now. The progression of material presented each day is building towards the celebration of Easter. While this devotional is geared towards Lent and preparing us for Easter, I would go through this devotional any time during the year.
Devotionals can easily become check boxes on the list of daily to dos but when given time in one's day it has the potential for impacting what one thinks about and applies during the course of the day. That is true of this devotional, the application and deep thinking I find myself given each day is encouraging and challenging to my walk with Jesus.
I highly recommend this devotional book for the season of Lent or if you are looking for a 40 day challenge. Thanks Moody Publishers for the complimentary book and for an opportunity to read this book and review it with my honest opinion.
Terry5 Stars Out Of 5Superb! - The Highest Quality Devotional This SeasonMarch 19, 2017TerryQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5There are a great number of Easter devotionals available, from a great number of authors. I have even reviewed some that have been published this year, specifically for the Lenten season. You will not find a Lent Devotional with a higher quality of content, than From the Grave from the writings of A.W. Tozer. I am nowhere near qualified even to comment, let alone critique and analyze Tozer's writing. He is one of the most honored pastors, speakers, and writers in recent history.
What I do feel qualified to comment on is the editor's assembly of the material. The devotionals contained in this book are from A.W. Tozer's sermons and books and have been selected specifically for the season of Lent. The editors did a splendid job of titling each reading, choosing the Scripture, and aligning this with Tozer's words. The daily readings themselves are not fluff. Each reading is about three pages long, and the material is profound and inspiring. You do not skim this devotional before bed or just before you run out the door for work. Each individual reading is something you will want to study, consider carefully, and probably read through a few times until the message really sinks in.
The presentation of the book itself is excellent. It is a hardcover book with no dustjacket, and the pages are beautifully designed. My only complaint is that the yellow font used for each Bible verse can be hard to read in low lighting. I realize that the font was selected to match the cover of the book, but it is probably just too faint for most people to read without a bright light nearby. Aside from this, From the Grave is easily the finest Lent Devotional on the market right now. You will be blessed for having read it.
I received acomplimentary copy of this book fromMoody Publishers. The opinions I have expressed are my own, and I was not required to write a positive review.
