BeckySW MIAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Loved it- Feel Like Family!April 11, 2020BeckySW MIAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5*To Suspect your Own Mortality is to Know the Beginning of Terror, To Learn Irrefutably that you are mortal is to Know the End of Terror.* (Frank Herbert) Unfortunately, a small group of Amanda Steven*s speculative fiction characters have discovered they are not mortal and are beginning to understand that for a curse. They outlive spouses and children by a century. The few longevites, as they call themselves, cannot die, and life has become burdensome. From Sky to Sky is the story of Zac Wilson, acrobat, stuntman and people person who finds that facades are impossible to keep up. He also has been running from God for a long, long time. He needs help. And he has the strong need to help others. Betrayed in book one (No Less Days) by the person whom he was closest to, can Zac get close again to others$
While Stevens gives enough backstory a reader could start with this book, it would be best to read book one first. It sets the tone for this story, plus the reader can understand David and Tiana, whose story was the lion*s share of that novel. I was slow to identify with these characters, but maybe when Zac*s worst weakness shows up, I was hooked. I needed to see if the new characters would be accepted into the original group. Would Zac find God again$ David and Tiana exhibit so much patient faith in prayer. I love the way David and Tiana pray so comfortably, succinctly for Zac. When the longevites discover their new friends may have an enemy, by extension, they do, too. How do all these threads fit together$
Fortunately, Stevens uses imagery and levity well and in just the right places. I enjoyed listening to the waves lap against the shores of Lake Michigan and feeling the sand beneath my feet with Zac and Simon, Rachel and Cady. By the time the story was ended, I felt like I was a part of the longevite family. There was so much growth in Zac, it was incredible. I can*t wait for the next story to see whose life we get to participate in. Marking this a sleeper favorite.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book by the publisher and NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinions, which are solely my own. -
Mrs ARS5 Stars Out Of 5Makes you thinkMarch 5, 2020Mrs ARSQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Is immortality a curse or a blessing? Here in this second edition of author Stevens novels about people who cannot die, we are given Zac's story. Zac is the fun loving, handsome, dare devil guy- that everybody loves. But what is he hiding? The hurts and the truths that he has not been able to share?
This is a continuing of the story we started in No Less Days and we go deeper into the mythology of what makes these humans different- they don't die. Though they can be hurt and scarred, physically and emotionally as well as spiritually.
Another theme was family and what constitutes as family. What happens when family betrays you? Is family more than blood? Where David was more of a loner passing his life contentedly alone, Zac needs and craves some semblance of family.
And how about faith? What would that look like when you have been running from God all of your very long, long life? Zac must grapple with his eternal condition as well as his immortal one.
This is a bit of a different read. A little mysterious, a little supernatural, but it is a read that makes you think about faith, family, and our own mortality.
I received a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own. -
DeannaNEAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5What if immortality exists??March 2, 2020DeannaNEAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5It's called Christian Suspense/Fantasy and not something I usually read but.. I really enjoyed this story. Saved after a.. well, almost fatal accident Zac now doesn't age and injuries don't kill him. Someone has figured out that he has some miracle healing quality and targets him to prove it. Interesting story on immortality as we discover there are more in Zac's family group with the same situation. Some suspense, drama and surprises that make this speculative fiction almost believable. I hope there is another book coming soon! I was gifted a copy, no review was required. My review is voluntary.

AnnelrBrighton, MIAge: Over 65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Great speculative fictionFebruary 24, 2020AnnelrBrighton, MIAge: Over 65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5From Sky to Sky is the second book in the No Less Days series by Amanda Stevens. While it is easily read as a stand-alone book, I think reading the first book in the series will give more full enjoyment. Speculative fiction, while not necessarily a favorite of mine is still a genre I enjoy. Stevens writes of Longevites, immortals, individuals who cannot die. It's a small group who has become a family and now two more have shown up, needing help. What happens to the dynamics of the family? How will the individuals interact and react to the situations presented? Stevens tells a fascinating story. The story flows well with vivid prose and is rich with interesting and well-fleshed out characters and some twists to the plot that I did not see coming. Characters that are complex and realistic (strong yet flawed and timeless emotions despite being immortal) and evocative (you like them or you don't, you root for them to connect and make the right decisions). From Sky to Sky is a story about fears, friends, and family...about finding a home. It is a story about coming to recognize the grace of God is at work throughout one's life, about recognizing that God never left, He has always been there through every situation. I like how the author wrote a list of discussion questions at the end of the book, questions that help the reader think more about the themes of the book. I look forward to reading more from this author.
I received a complimentary copy of the book from Barbour Publishing and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own. -
MJSHNJAge: 35-44Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5a great follow up to No Less DaysFebruary 24, 2020MJSHNJAge: 35-44Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5"Silence in company didn't hold the weight and mass of silence alone."
I highly recommend that you read No Less Days first before reading From Sky to Sky. The first book sets the premise and some of the characters in place so that you're not confused by how things pick up at the beginning of this story. The journey of the "elderfolk" or "longevites" continues through third person limited perspective of Zac Wilson who was introduced during the first book. David Galloway who indoctrinated the readers into the plight of the "longevites" in No Less Days also plays a prominent role in this book. The plot has twists and turns that takes the reader to places unexpected, as the author beautifully melds lyrical prose, intense and raw emotions, redemption and God's unrelenting love with a hefty dose of speculative/sci-fi and wonderfully complex, layered characters.
Zac is an unforgettable character. Impulsive, passionate, vivid, and full of life, he sees and acts with emotion and has an extra sense of empathy that allows him to bond with people but also becomes his Achilles' heel. Zac meets other longevites that he longs to enfold into his family but tragic circumstances, misunderstandings, and century-old fears become obstacles in their relationships. I really enjoyed getting to know Zac, just like I did getting to know David. His struggle against the injustices of the world, his struggle against God Himself and his past pain, and his PTSD are real, tangible, and extremely relatable. Though this book answered questions that were left at the end of the first book, it ended without a definitive conclusion.....so I'm thinking there is a third book in the series?
If you enjoy a well-written book that is somewhat outside-the-box, you will totally love this book. I received a copy of the book from the publisher via Celebrate Lit Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.
