I feel like this book is something God brought into my life at the exact moment I needed it. I have been living in my brokenness for too long - holding on to the hurts that I've allowed to define me.

This book is full of encouragement and reminders of God's love. Because it was such an important read for me and I wanted to get as much out of it as I could, I did not read this book fast but savored it and highlighted so many things. It's definitely a book that can guide you out of your broken state and into freedom in Christ.

Renee doesn't speak down to us from some lofty place, but speaks to us as a friend or sister as she shares her own story. I loved how she was so open and honest about her own journey as it encouraged me. Sharing her own wisdom from where she's been plus the Biblical wisdom of God, she sets us on a path to freedom from the hurtful brokenness in our own life.

I truly enjoyed this book so much and gained so much from it. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to move forward and live their lives in freedom! I give this book 5 stars.

*This book was provided to me by Bethany House. I received a copy of this book to review but I was not financially compensated in any way. The opinions expressed are my own and are based on my observations while reading this book.

    I thought I was free...

I thought I was free, but this book challenged me to think about what it means to truly be abundantly free. Each chapter helped me to shift my thinking and make adjustments in my life to focus my identity on freedom and not on my brokenness. Jennifer shares scripture, personal stories and practical wisdom along with gutsy prayers as she guides us on the journey to breakthrough, cheering us on along the way. This is a book you will want to let sink in and read again. I wanted to devour it, but in taking it slow and letting it simmer, I experienced breakthrough. If you are feeling stuck, and longing to be free, let her encouraging words inspire you on your journey to Freedom!

    Favorite Quotes:

"Brokenness was never meant to be the leading character in our stories. It's the backstory and the catalyst that leads to breakthrough, freedom in Christ and the unleashing of your holy roar."

"Remember, 'almost free' isn't freedom at all. It is a trick the enemy uses to hold us captive with a counterfeit liberty that leaves us soul-starved."

Watson has given readers a wonderfully encouraging book. We women are to be a light showing the way in the wilderness, a stream that refreshes those around us. (170) Often life seems just the opposite, however. We feel stuck. We fight obstacles. We are broken.

Watson encourages women to be gutsy in our pursuit of freedom. We ask God what lies we are believing. We fight against the mindset of being stuck. We intentionally let go of things in our past, refusing to bask in our brokenness. We commit to moving forward because of the finished work of Christ. We seek to have a supportive group of women with us.

We have to fight for our freedom and Watson has provided tools to do so. She includes practical ideas, such as ones for battling the negative talk within. She helps us embrace a moving-on mindset. She encourages us to realize our issues were never meant to be limitations but launching pads to growth. I love her personal take on 1 Corinthians 13, applying it to ourselves.

This is an excellent book for women who want to move beyond their place of feeling stuck. Watson provides good examples as well as effective and encouraging teaching. This would be a good book for personal journaling or a group study as there are reflective questions at the end of each chapter.

Food for thought: "He will use each heartache for His glory if you let Him." (17)

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

Within the first two chapters of this powerful book, I had made a mental list of over 20 "me too" links between my story and Jennifer Renee Watson's story. She openly shares her stories about her father wound, struggle with depression, lack of confidence, and other common problems Christian women face. You will read it and find yourself nodding your head while Jennifer unfolds her stories alongside God's truths.

Jennifer has been in ministry for more than two decades, so you can trust that she knows what she's talking about. I like the sass and transparency mixture in her writing voice, and the way she helped me feel pumped up after each chapter. Facing your deepest hurts isn't easy, and Jennifer never pretends it is. She comes alongside you and helps you be honest about your struggles so you can find healing and freedom from them once and for all.

I love the pretty pearl finish of this book as well as the lines to fill in your thoughts. The reflective questions are great for personal application, and you could also use them for group study. I think this book would be an excellent resource for mentoring between women of different generations.

She is also one of the featured speakers on a new podcast, More Than Small Talk, with authors Suzanne Eller and Holley Gerth. I encourage you to check out the podcast and the book. You will find Jennifer's candor to be refreshing and motivational.

    Favorite Quotes from Freedom!:

You can't be a victim when your hands are in the air praising God.

Seeds are planted by others who have spoken hurtful things to us, but only we can water and feed those thoughts.

There are treasures hidden in dark places, and sometimes we have to mine for diamonds in the stark, cold night.

Thanks to Bethany House and Netgalley for providing me a review copy of Freedom!.

why is this book so important?

Why is this book so important?

    Let's look at some statistics:

    In the US:

4 million women last year reported misusing prescription drugs. That's 1 in 41.

1 in 5 women will be raped in their lifetime, with 1 in 4 women being sexually abused before the age of 18.

18% of moms fall into the "excessive or addictive" category when it comes to drinking.

1 in 5 women experience some sort of mental health issue (twice the rate of men)

Women are TWICE as likely to ATTEMPT suicide compared to men

Half of women believe that being depressed in normal.

Normal!? We have been decieved into believing that depression is normal. That the misuse of prescriptions and alcohol is normal. That suicidal thoughts is normal. That brokeness, because of our past situations, is normal.

That's where this book comes in.

Jennifer Watson has a way of writing that doesn't pull any punches...she is open, honest and truthfull, but she does it in a way that is layered with a sisterhood of understanding and topped with a heaping dose of hope.

From personal experience, she brings understanding and empathy to the struggles that so many of us have, but she doesn't allow us to stay there. She let's us know that we are not alone and that "it's ok to not be OK..for a season.", but then...she uses her own seasons of brokeness to explode like dynamite into the bigger, brighter and better future that God had instore for herself... and that God has in store for you.

I hope you will find this book to be a warm blanket of peace that I have found it to be and a stepping stone to finding your own personal freedom from whatever is keeping you back from you best life.
