With millions of copies in print, Foxe's Book ofMartyrs has become a classic of magnificent courage and faith. This unparalleled volume chronicles the tragic yet triumphant stories of men and women who faced torture and martyrdom rather than deny their vision of truth and of God. Beginning with Jesus Christ, this exceptional historical record traces the roots of religious persecution through the sixteenth century. It examines the heroic lives of great men and women such as John Hus, John Wycliffe, William Tyndale, Anne Askew, Lady Jane Grey, and Martin Luther. John Foxe also knew persecution. Forced to flee from his native England to Europe during Queen Mary's severe persecution of those holding Reformed views, he carefully compiled records of martyred Christians. His writings possess a sense of immediacy and insight into suffering that few "objective" church historians can match. This edition has been streamlined and reorganized by W. Grinton Berry to present work in today's language.

AlAge: Over 65Gender: Male5 Stars Out Of 5Foxe's Book of Martyrs.September 9, 2016AlAge: Over 65Gender: MaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5No matter what the last sentence of the "Product Description" touts, this is hardly "today's language." Some may find it a difficult read, being in period language (16th century); but after a bit of reading, what's written flows wonderfully. If one struggles with the prose in the KJV, this is definitely not for you. There are more modern renderings of Foxe, but the beauty and flavor is lost. It's tantamount to where both beauty and detail are lost through modern translations of the KJV.
Vickey Murphy4 Stars Out Of 5understanding the King's EnglishJanuary 27, 2016Vickey MurphyQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0Interesting book, had to stop several times to check definition of some word's used in the 14-16th century, ie. Ague means malaria to our generation. Felt like I was in medieval times.
