NeilSafford, AZAge: 55-65Gender: Male1 Stars Out Of 5I doubt that it will help most people who have emotional baggageFebruary 11, 2021NeilSafford, AZAge: 55-65Gender: MaleQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 3I don't think this book will help people who have been truly assaulted emotionally. It suggests that if you are still suffering from a past wrong then your problem is failure to forgive. Failure to forgive is not the problem. I don't know if there is any way to heal the emotional wound caused by a bully but forgiving won't heal yourself. The damage that has been caused to you is permanent and you can do some things to move on. Some of those things may be theraputic such as writing the offenses down on paper. It helps to talk about them. Express them in art. Whatever. Those actions really are misnamed if we want to call them forgiveness. Biblilal forgiveness reconciles estranged brothers and sisters. If reconciliation is not possible (and it sometimes is not possible), you need to do something to move on. Whatever that is, it shouldn't be called "forgiveness."
Terkeurst has a whole chapter filled with verses about forgiveness (chapter 14) but I think she does not properly interpret those passages.
If you are still suffering from past emotional damage, your problem may not be lack of forgiveness. If you are still looking for revenge, that is a problem that needs to be handled.
I don't think Terkeurst's book is much help. It may even be harmful to some Christians who don't know what to do about their suffering.
On a personal level, I was not impressed with the writing style of the book. Some people will probably love it. It reads like a diary or journal of Terkeurst's journey of forgiving and self-healing after her own emotional trauma. I'm sure it is good writing. It is just not my thing. -
