The hardcover Student Textbook is divided into 6 units (history, economics, science & technology, geography, culture, citizenship, government, and national symbols) with daily lessons. Students will learn understand the concepts of place, good citizenship, family and community, customs, holidays and traditions, basic human needs and wants, supply and demand, and more. Units begin with a song, poem, or primary source that introduces the topic; a vocabulary preview illustrates new terms with photos while a "reading social studies" section provides examples of comprehension skills such as using context and picture clues.
Lessons provide leveled paragraphs for students to read with highlighted new terms and large photographs. "What did you learn?" review questions help to reinforce content. "Thinking Skills" pages provide an opportunity to think through various topics while "Try It!" questions ask children to think critically about the steps shown and brainstorm their own ideas. "Map and Globe Skills" pages provide opportunities to encourage geography and map skills while "Biography" pages provide topically-related, short biographical sketches with photos, maps, and illustrations. Unit reviews assess students' knowledge of the vocabulary, concepts, critical thinking skills, map skills, and content-memory of the unit. Hardcover.
The Student Workbook includes the exercises necessary to reinforce the skills and concepts presented in the student textbook. Each page includes the corresponding textbook pages at the top. The directions are provided at the bottom of the page, along with a home activity. The pages are perforated for easy removal. Softcover.
The Teacher's Guide has tabs dividing each unit for easy teaching. Each unit begins with a unit planning guide that covers the vocabulary, lesson titles & page numbers, pacing, main ideas, resources, and ESL/Leveled practice information; objectives and assessment information is also provided.
