Student text units are divided into weeks, each with a theme, that includes specific phonic, comprehension, vocabulary, writing, interdisciplinary reading, and "Let's Learn It" exercises that highlight fluency, vocabulary, and listening & speaking skills. The unit ends with a separate poetry section. Stories have important words highlighted with "Let's Think About." questions in the margins, helping kids to think critically about what they've read. The beginning of each unit features objectives, compare/contrast examples, vocabulary strategies, and reading comprehension strategies.
The Teacher's Resource DVD-ROM includes all the instruction materials you'll need to teach your students, with the home page providing access to printable resources. Activities and worksheets by unit and subject (such as vocab practice), teaching guides for each unit with blank lesson planners and writing rubrics, and vocabulary resources that include multiple word card sets (all of which have the unit and weekly lesson correlation on them) are included among the reproducibles.
The ExamView Assessment Suite CD-ROM lets you create, customize, and print your own tests, then analyzes the results and prescribes re-teaching activities. Baseline tests, fresh reads, weekly tests, and unit/end-of-year benchmark tests are included.

This program asserts that it is a complete language arts program but, while all the components of a full LA program are technically there, it requires so much supplementing that it cannot be used by itself for that purpose in my opinion. For instance, the program includes spelling lists in the (incredibly complicated) teachers manual, but very little tips for how to teach spelling or the rules of spelling. The same is true of the grammar component. The teacher's manual, called the Guide on the Side or GOTS, includes a schedule for introducing concepts but there are no lessons plans or tips for how to teach the concepts, so you're completely on your own for these. This is also true for the phonics component. The basic idea of what to teach is provided, but there is very little information for actually teaching the concepts.
The program includes 2 beautiful, hardcover books and 2 CD-ROMS. One CD-ROM has weekly, unit and end of year tests and the other has many worksheets that cover the topics presented in the book. I find this program to focus far too heavily on worksheets for review. Though there are some games presented on the resource CD-ROM, there is very little else besides worksheets to review concepts and I found the worksheets to be very basic.
I felt that this program was very frustrating and time consuming to use. The Guide on the Side, while it is full of information, is much better suited for a classroom teacher teaching 25 kids than a homeschool parent schooling their child. I found it incredibly difficult to sort through to find helpful information. While the books themselves include a lot of great stories with beautiful illustrations, I found many of the comprehension questions to be over my son's head much of the time.
Overall, I would not recommend this program. The workbooks make fantastic readers for personal reading or reading together with your child, but for the price you pay for this program, it is not worth it to use it for that purpose. While it can be used as the framework for a complete LA program, it requires so much extra supplementing and research to teach the concepts presented that it really makes the program a very poor value.
