GingerS2194 Stars Out Of 5Touching storyAugust 1, 2014GingerS219Quality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I'm a big fan of Scottish books, and this one by Jennifer Hudson Taylor is no exception. For Love or Loyalty is a gripping tale about the struggles of the MacGregor family and one of the Campbelss, who is innocent of the crimes committed by her father and brother but is made to pay in ways she never expected.
In some places, the story is hard to read, not because the writing is bad, but because the situation is sad. It was a very touching story.
I received this book from the publisher/author for the purpose of review. The above is my honest opinion.
ASC Book ReviewsNMAge: 18-24Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Love love love this book!March 18, 2014ASC Book ReviewsNMAge: 18-24Gender: femaleI was SO blessed by this story! For love or loyalty is such an adventure and full journey! Lauren is the kind of Christian woman I want to be and yet this book also holds the reality that even the strongest in Faith have their moments of fear and, sadly, doubt. It also shows how as humans we can't always see the big picture like God can, but that doesn't mean He leaves us! :) Starting out in Scotland Jennifer takes us across the sea to America. The hardships of travel for both the people able to pay and the indentured servants is shown realistically from sickness to danger. There are many great characters in this as Malcolm and Lauren find friends on and off the ship, but their are also many enemies with terrible intentions. Through it all God watches over them as He shapes them into the people they need to be through the trials they face and the decisions they make. Twists and surprises abound within these chapters. Just when I thought I knew what was going to happen Jennifer threw in another turn that I didn't see coming. For Love or Loyalty is a great read with adventure, suspense, Faith, love, courage, hope and so much more! I cannot wait for For Love or Country!!! This is a MUST READ!!! :)

I'm a big fan of reading about voyages to America. Maybe it's because we are all immigrants of the heart here in America's big melting pot. Or maybe it's because something about wanting a better life no matter what the cost that calls to each of us across the winds of time. This novel wasn't all about the voyage, but it was most certainly one of my favorite elements of the story. Add to it the drama of being sold off in return for personal gain, and you've got the kind of story that demands to be read.
The characters were well developed, with the hero and heroine having enough conflict between them to serve up grounds for some serious revenge. When Malcolm discovers his what he's done, it's a race against time and fate, with everything that matters on the line. How do you choose between your family and the one your heart loves? Taylor's first novel in the MacGregor Legacy series is a captivating, spell-binding and riveting journey from Scotland to South Carolina, and embodies the spirit of the times with all the elements of a perfect story. This novel is not to be missed, and I highly recommend it.

Maria4 Stars Out Of 5December 15, 2013MariaFor Love or Loyalty by Jennifer Hudson Taylor is the first book in The MacGregor Legacy series. I liked the two main characters in the book, but the story line itself was a little much to me. Too many things happened in quick succession that it went from being sort of realistic to absolutely not realistic. Even though I was irritated at the plot ideas, I did enjoy the book because the characters and the dialogue were so well written. I really want to read about the other MacGregor brothers in the next books!
Malcolm MacGregor is shocked and dismayed to come home from a trip to find that his mom and sister were taken by the Campbells. When one of MacGregor's men comes back with Lauren Campbell, Malcolm hatches an idea to reclaim his family from indentured service in America. Hauling Lauren with him, they board a ship heading to America, but on the trip over Malcolm regrets his impulsive decision to force Lauren to board the ship with him.
When Lauren Campbell hears what her father has done to the MacGregor's, she is filled with dismay and sadness. She is shocked when Malcolm forces her to travel to America. Lauren disagrees with his methods, but she understands that he just wants to get his family back. While on board with Malcolm, she starts to fall in love with him and can only hope that they can be together since their family feud seems like an insurmountable obstacle.
I loved reading about America before the Revolutionary War! One of the best parts of the book is how the author writes the locations really well whether it is on the boat or in the Carolinas it feels like you are there, too. :-) Overall, it was a pretty good read. I give it 3.5 stars.
I was given this book free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I Love Jeniffer Hudson's books and normally follow her new releases. This was no different. She has a talent to spin a tale about Scotland and 1700 that makes you wish you lived there and at that time. But this book was a bit different. Even though I, just like Lauren and Malcom see all the good that came out of the bad and the healing that came after pain. It's just at some point - the harshness of MacGregor's clan plight and then the crude journey over the ocean that took so many lives and then even more cruelty and injustice in the colonies. After the pink house I was ready for something good and guess what!!! After that there was only good. Sometimes our lives seem just like that- blow after blow and after blow and you seem to not be able to take a breath in between. At those times God seems oceans away, but in truth after all is over we realize that He was there contemplating and orchestrating everything and even though he caused us a bit of pain and discomfort, this experience delivers people and saves lives. I loved this story and especially the fact that there are two people- Malcom who believes himself cursed and Lauren who holds God tight in her heart, and they both get hit pretty bad. Your faith doesn't save you from the cruel hand of others but it saves your sanity and gives you reason not to give up.
If you are looking for a book beyond a sweet romance and interesting history this book is deffenetly for you. Read it and let it teach you from its characters lives that revenge and bitterness will never give you the peace and happiness that God and forgiveness can give.
I really enjoyed this book and I hope you do too.
