From the back cover: A courageous colonial spy A daring British captain Will they risk it all to win at love?
At the height of the Revolutionary War, Tyra MacGregor works to thwart the British Army as a colonial spy. Although her friendship with the natives allows her to keep eyes on her adversaries, Tyras sleuthing ways come to a screeching halt when Captain Donahue Hugh Morgan puts her under house arrest. Yet even under guard, Tyras strong convictions and unshakable faith in God remain . . . and cause Hugh to call his own beliefs into question.
When Tyra saves Hughs life after an attack, he vows to return the favor. Before he can intervene, however, she is caught by his superior officer and imprisoned. Hugh is supposed to be at war with her, and yet the battle is inside. Why can he not shake the feelings he has for his supposed enemy? With his honor, faith, and loyalty on the line, what will he choose? Will he fight for love . . . or country?
Tyra is loyal to America, Hugh is loyal to England. Tyra is fighting for independence, Hugh is fighting to keep control. This puts an enormous amount of tension upon these two that should not lead to romance. However Once the romance does begin what do they do? Should they be loyal to their countries or loyal to God and to each other? The Revolutionary War and spies are just some of the ingredients that are in this recipe for action, adventure and suspense. This is a very exciting book and Ms. Hudson has filled it with great characters that live on the pages. We come to care for these two as we would for our friends and we want them to succeed. Want a fun read that will not only entertain you but make you think as well? Well then I recommend For Love Or Country.

In addition to a compelling story, I learned some things about the Revolutionary War, the British, and the local Indians.
The year is 1780 and the Revolutionary War is in progress. The MacGregor men have left their rice plantation southeast of Wilmington and are part of the Continental Army. Remaining at the home are Mrs. MacGregor, Tyra, and a young son. The Tuscarora Indians, whom the MacGregors have befriended, discover two wounded Redcoats and take them to the MacGregor plantation. One of the men is Captain Donahue "Hugh" Morgan. As he recuperates in the MacGregor household, he becomes fond of Tyra.
But Tyra is a patriot. Known as the "War Woman," she is not afraid to help the colonialist cause. Her fiery temper doesn't help at all when she comes to the attention of Hugh's superior officer. She is in trouble and Hugh has to choose between love and country.
Hudson lets us know at the very beginning the historical facts the novel is based upon. The Tuscarora Indians actually lived in the swamps in the Wilmington area. Several of the officers in the story are historical as well. I really appreciate that information at the beginning of the book.
I love it when I learn something while reading fiction and Hudson has done a great job of describing the conditions for colonialists during the Revolutionary War. I was surprised to learn it affected churches too. For example, the MacGregors had attended a Presbyterian church. The church was run by Scotland. Most of the families were loyal to the King of England, having taken an oath to do so after the Jacobite rebellion. When the Revolutionary War began, those who supported the colonial cause were asked to leave the church. I was happy to read that the MacGregors retained their strong faith nonetheless.
I highly recommend this historical novel. You will get a sense of what the war was like and you will learn some history. The characters are well developed and believable. The historical accuracy of the book is great and the romance well done.
I received a complimentary digital copy of this book from the author for the purpose of an independent and honest review.
crtnybcBritish Columbia, CanadaAge: 35-44Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Intriguing historical fictionJuly 2, 2014crtnybcBritish Columbia, CanadaAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 5For Love Or Country is the second book in the MacGregor Quest Series. The first book follows Tyra's parents as they sail from Scotland and eventually settle in the states to raise a family. The Revolutionary War is now in full swing, and unlike many of their countrymen who have also settled nearby, the MacGregor family joins the fight to keep the freedom they cherish in their new country. Tyra's father and three of her brothers are fighting against the British, and she has secretly joined the rebel patriots as well. All of that becomes far more dangerous when a wounded British soldier is brought to her and she nurses him back to health. He is then stationed in their home to keep an eye on their activities.
Hugh and his brother joined the army to escape the life of poverty they were born into in England. They wanted to make something of themselves and earn respect and a place in society. He is fighting out of loyalty to his country and because he is a man of his word, not out of any major conviction about the reason for the war and his convictions are sorely tested as he comes to know the MacGregors.
I enjoyed the story, although it wandered a bit from time to time. I appreciated that knowing the right thing to do in the difficult situations that war can put you in required thought and prayer and some amount of struggle for the characters, and things did not always go easily for them. It's a clean historical romance, and the author has obviously done a lot of research into her subject.
This book was provided to me by Upon The Rock Publicist and Abingdon Press for the purpose of an honest review. My opinion is my own.
