Bonnie5 Stars Out Of 5Loved it!December 3, 2014BonnieQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5We did this program in December 2013. Many people told us it was the best Christmas program they had ever seen. This program can be as simple or as elaborate as you want. We did not use any scenery, just costumes and props.
I am going to write a description of how we performed the play for those who might be considering using it.
I find that most families don't have time for a lot of extra practices during the week. Elementary students (grades 1-4) sang two of the songs (Follow the Star and We Three Kings), the congregation sang the final song (a carol medley) and I had soloists and small groups of older kids sing the two other songs (Out of Bethlehem Sky and Adore Him). Doing it this way allowed the younger kids to learn their songs on Sunday morning during Sunday school so we did not need to schedule other practices during the week. I would rather have the kids do fewer songs really well, than do all 5 songs mediocre.
I did schedule Saturday practices with the "actors". There are 9 speaking parts. 3 parts (the page and 2 Chief priests are small parts that won't require a lot of practice time). The other parts are the three wise men, Mary, Joseph, and King Herod. As you can see, not a lot of girls, which worked out for us as I had an abundance of boys that year. We also had a non speaking "star" which was a child in a star costume. He entered from the back of the sanctuary during one of the songs and stood over the manger so the wise men could find the baby.
This was a great program with "singable" songs. I find some of these programs to have songs that are overly complicated or just not enjoyable. I have learned that if the songs aren't great, the entire program falls flat. I highly recommend this musical for churches of all sizes.
Q: Why don't publishers list the number of characters in the musicals? A few do, but most don't and they won't show the page in the contents or excerpt!! I won't order something unless I know ahead of time it will work for the group of kids I have. Each year is different.
I have listed the cast of characters for this musical:
Cheif Priest #1
Chief Priest #2
Caravan Servants (non-speaking)
