I started home-schooling my four children in 1996. Without a doubt, I can honestly say that in my own school experience and practically 20 years of home-schooling that this is the most enjoyable science book I have ever read. I am thrilled with it. This book is not boring or repetitive and is full of interesting, fun information. Thank you, Jeannie Fulbright! I wish I had these books for my first three children.
Apologia, Zoology 1, Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day

This is an absolutely beautiful book. Very good quality. Lots of beautiful pictures. My only concern is like a lot of other text books it's a kind of one size fits all. I got this for a 3rd grader and I think there is a bit too much information in this textbook for her. In the first lessons it goes into things like Latin names that I have difficulty with and I went to college. I'm not saying don't get this curriculum for younger students. Do keep in mind though that you may have to pick and choose out of it for younger students. I'm not sorry I bought this curriculum. It's beautiful and I love the way it reads. It gives glory to our Creator which I love. We only just started it this week in our home school and I will have to go slow. Probably a higher level 3rd grader would do OK with it, but in my humble opinion it might be better to wait until at least 4th grade. I also purchased the Jr Notebook to go along with it. It is beautiful as well. I highly recommend this curriculumm but just be aware that it could be a little much for younger children.
Complete and Appropriate for Lower Elementary - Zoology 1

We started our Science studies with Astronomy, then Botany and this is our first foray into Zoology. I fully appreciate the order at which Apologia introduces science to young learners like mine. It's logical and lays a good foundation for this Zoology course. If you're starting with the Zoology component for Science this is a good place to start as basic concepts are introduced here. My youngest was in Kindergarten and he enjoyed this. My Grades 2 and 3 children also enjoyed this.
I did struggle with the narration parts and needed to supplement with videos and additional images. The book does have additional support for its users but I found that my own Internet searches were quicker and easier for us.
It's also a good buy if you are multi-level homeschooling. As for the activities, I started out trying to do all that we could but later on restricted ourselves to those activities that were realistically possible for us and which my kids were truly interested in.
