gmfp5 Stars Out Of 5Favorite Science CurriculumMarch 1, 2017gmfpQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I love this science curriculum. it has notebooking activities (sold in a separate journal), pauses after sections for review questions (tell what u learned), puzzles at end of lessons, creation confirmations, experiments, reports/projects and detailed info with a variety of subject matter to choose from. I am a former, high school science teacher & can confirm the validity of the book info.

Cindy Lou Who5 Stars Out Of 5This is my favorite Science book of all time!March 8, 2016Cindy Lou WhoQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I started home-schooling my four children in 1996. Without a doubt, I can honestly say that in my own school experience and practically 20 years of home-schooling that this is the most enjoyable science book I have ever read. I am thrilled with it. This book is not boring or repetitive and is full of interesting, fun information. Thank you, Jeannie Fulbright! I wish I had these books for my first three children.
Polly4 Stars Out Of 5Apologia, Zoology 1, Flying Creatures of the Fifth DayNovember 18, 2015PollyQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0This is an absolutely beautiful book. Very good quality. Lots of beautiful pictures. My only concern is like a lot of other text books it's a kind of one size fits all. I got this for a 3rd grader and I think there is a bit too much information in this textbook for her. In the first lessons it goes into things like Latin names that I have difficulty with and I went to college. I'm not saying don't get this curriculum for younger students. Do keep in mind though that you may have to pick and choose out of it for younger students. I'm not sorry I bought this curriculum. It's beautiful and I love the way it reads. It gives glory to our Creator which I love. We only just started it this week in our home school and I will have to go slow. Probably a higher level 3rd grader would do OK with it, but in my humble opinion it might be better to wait until at least 4th grade. I also purchased the Jr Notebook to go along with it. It is beautiful as well. I highly recommend this curriculumm but just be aware that it could be a little much for younger children.
MaryRTOPhilippinesAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Complete and Appropriate for Lower Elementary - Zoology 1October 9, 2015MaryRTOPhilippinesAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4We started our Science studies with Astronomy, then Botany and this is our first foray into Zoology. I fully appreciate the order at which Apologia introduces science to young learners like mine. It's logical and lays a good foundation for this Zoology course. If you're starting with the Zoology component for Science this is a good place to start as basic concepts are introduced here. My youngest was in Kindergarten and he enjoyed this. My Grades 2 and 3 children also enjoyed this.
I did struggle with the narration parts and needed to supplement with videos and additional images. The book does have additional support for its users but I found that my own Internet searches were quicker and easier for us.
It's also a good buy if you are multi-level homeschooling. As for the activities, I started out trying to do all that we could but later on restricted ourselves to those activities that were realistically possible for us and which my kids were truly interested in.
Ask a Question▼▲
Q: I was wondering if I buy the text book and the notebooking journal, if I need to invest in the lab kit as well. Thanks!
The lab kit contains all the items needed to complete the activities in the Zoology 1 text. You can see a list of the contents under Contents (PDF) at stock #WW697400, Apologia Zoology 1 Lab Kit. If these are items you already have, you would not need the lab kit.
Q: I'm looking into buying the Apologia Zoology 2 and wondering if you have to start with Zoology 1 first? I'm looking into buying the Apologia Zoology 2 and wondering if you have to start with Zoology 1 first? My kids are more interested in the sea animals than flying animals right now. But that would be doing them backwards, just wanted to know if that mattered. Thanks!Julie
The publisher recommends doing the Zoology books in order because there are terms defined in Book 1 that are used in Book 2, and terms defined in Book 2 that are used in Book 3. However, if a parent has a general knowledge of life science and you do the Zoology books out of order, the parent can just explain those terms as they are encountered.
Q: Is there a teacher's book for this (with answers to questions) or a test book to give student's tests?
Books in the Apologia Elementary series do not require teacher's guides or tests. These books are based on the philosophy that children learn by engaging in activities related to the subject matter. No testing is done until the children enter into higher level sciences. Answers to the in-text questions are included at the back of the book.
Q: if we do the journaling notebook along with the textbook, do we really need the lapbooking products too?
No, the lapbooks are an additional supplement, like the notebooking journal, that allow the student to review the lessons in a more artistic venue.
