Trying to escape the shambles her con-man father has made of their reputation, Lucinda Curtis arrives in West Point, New York, determined to land a husband from the military academy. Campbell Conklin is first in his class and preparing to embark upon a storied career in the U.S. Army. Lucinda thinks Campbell will make the perfect husband . . . as long as he does not find out about her father.
Seth Westcott also has taken a liking to Lucinda. He's kind, smart . . . and working extremely hard to graduate last. Tradition states that the worst cadets are assigned to the cavalry out west. And west is where Seth must head to track the swindler who stole all of Seth's mother's money. Seth is smart enough to vie for the top spot, but life isn't fair and this is his chance to catch the man who ruined his family. It's too bad Campbell is all shine and no substance, but Lucinda will surely see through all of that, won't she?
Fitzysmom4 Stars Out Of 5Review from Rambles of a SAHMJune 6, 2016FitzysmomQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4In my opinion you can always count on a novel by Siri Mitchell to be not only entertaining but informative as well. Flirtation Walk continues that tradition with a twist on the old con artist story line and a peek inside the life of a cadet at West Point in the mid 1850s.
In most historical romances we are used to seeing the male be the con artist, but in this instance it is the main character Lucinda Pennyworth. At the beginning of the story she learns that her father is dead and she decides to repent of her wicked ways and make a new life for herself. In order to do that she heads to Buttermilk Falls to hopefully take up residence with her late mother's family.
There she meets up with handsome cadet, Seth Westcott. Seth is the pride of West Point and has a very promising future ahead of him. But before he can assume his new position tragedy strikes his family and he and his sister find themselves the victims of a vicious swindle.
Watching these two lives be woven together was a delight. Siri Mitchell does such a fabulous job of bringing humor and wisdom to her stories. In this case I kept thinking of the famous Shakespeare quote "To thine own self be true." At the end of the day both Lucinda and Seth had to decide if their actions were ones they could live with. And when they found that they couldn't they had to find a way to make things right.
Flirtation Walk is a good reminder that when all is said and done our good name is our lasting legacy. I enjoyed the gentle reminder in addition to the well told story.

In FLIRTATION WALK, the chapters alternate between Lucinda and Seth. Lucinda is a young woman who has just been notified that her father has died, so she travels from her boarding school to Buttermilk Falls, near West Point, to meet her late mother's family for the first time. Her mother had run off with her father, a disgraced West Point cadet turned con man, so the meeting was rocky. However, they do allow her to stay. Lucinda had been groomed to help her father in his cons but now wants to put that all behind her and become a "normal" person. Seth Westcott is a promising young cadet, tops in his class. Because of some circumstances regarding his orphaned sister, he sets in motion a plan that he hopes will enable him to go west with the cavalry after graduation, rather than to an engineering assignment as expected. His close friends, Deacon, Dandy, and Otter, all Immortals (cadets at the bottom of the class) come up with wild schemes to help him. Seth and Lucinda meet at her aunt and uncle's home (the uncle is a professor at West Point). They are attracted to each other but their path to love is not an easy one, with Seth falling from grace as a cadet and Lucinda's past coming back to meet her. This is a fascinating look at West Point in 1855 with a very engaging story line and endearing characters. I'd very much like to read more about them. FLIRTATION WALK is perfect for the historical romance reader who also likes to learn about history.

The main characters are Seth Westcott, a cadet at the academy and Lucinda Pennyworth, the niece of one of the teachers at the academy. Lucinda has arrived in town to throw herself on the mercy of her aunt and uncle whom she has never met after the death of her father. She has nowhere else to go and no way to earn an honest living as she has been in finishing school. She has survived in the past as an accomplice to her father and his swindling schemes, cheating people out of their money. Lucinda has never thought of this as something bad as her father has told her they are exchanging their money for hope. Then, while living with her aunt, she begins to see truth and is convicted of all the lies and deception her father has taught her. She learns about God in a new, revealing way and has His light shine on the darkness in her life. She also develops a fondness for Seth, but eventually sees her past prevents a future with him.
Seth is in his last year at the academy. He receives a letter telling of his mothers death and his younger sister being left to sell the family farm on her own. Seth is denied leave from the army to help his sister. On her way to live with relatives in Kentucky, she loses all the money by investing in a nonexistent hotel. Her only proof is a worthless deed to property that doesnt exist. Seth vows to find the swindler and get the money back, but to do so he needs to go west where the swindler has been operating. Only the lowliest of cadets makes it into the cavalry and get sent west. The only problem is Seth is at the top of his class and due to be sent to Europe immediately after graduation, leaving him no time to get his money back or take care of his sister. How will he accomplish justice?
I applaud the amount of research the author did to write this book and I really enjoyed learning more about the life of a cadet in the 1800s United States Military Academy. Lucindas father was such a mean snake! I really liked the supporting characters of Deacon, Dandy and Otter as well as Phoebe. I hope the series will continue and develop some stories for these characters. The plot was a little slow moving for me and the two main characters werent as appealing to me as they could have been, but overall I still liked the book.
CherylAge: 45-54Gender: Female4 Stars Out Of 5Full of wit, history, and heartApril 22, 2016CherylAge: 45-54Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4Flirtation Walk is the second book Ive read by Siri Mitchell, the first being Like a Flower in Bloom. Im so enthralled by Ms. Mitchells writing style. She has a talent for drawing the reader into a scene as if they are part of her cast. Her imagery is tangible, and she skillfully carries you to another place and time.
Lucinda Pennyworth is a gritty young woman, determined to reinvent herself, and Seth Westcott is an Army cadet, unwavering in his quest for revenge against the man who swindled his family. There are many historical references that give a strong sense of this pre-Civil War time period, and the secondary characters add a fullness to the story.
Full of wit, history, and heart, Flirtation Walk is a delightful display of a spirited woman facing her past and struggling to make a new and better beginning.

Upon learning of his death, she heads to West Point to reconnect with her deceased mother's family. They know nothing about her helping her father and she intends to keep it that way. Seth is a cadet at the academy. He's at the top of his class and expected to receive coveted orders upon graduation. But when his sister is swindled out of their family farm he takes risky measures to get to the bottom of his class so he can go out west to search for the man who conned their family. The two are the unlikeliest couple. Yet sometimes things are always as they appear.
This book started out painfully slow for me. But eventually the plot picked up a bit and I was able to get in to the story. The two main characters were about middle of the line for me as far as relate-ability and depth. The concept for the plot was solid and I enjoyed that part of it. The writing was good, as is usual for this author. The faith aspect seemed a little weak for me, considering it was Christian fiction. But that aspect seemed to fit with the characters so maybe that was the intend. My favorite part of the whole book as Seth's friends. They were entertaining and provided comic relief to the heaviness of the story. Overall, I enjoyed the book, but didn't love it.
I received this book free of charge from Bethany House in exchange for my honest review.
