    An Excellent Book

Some historical fiction books manage to capture the flavor of the time period as well as what it truly was like to live during that period, and Flights of Fancy by Jen Turano is one of those books. From the very beginning, I was able to relate to the difficulties Isadora Delafield, as an heiress had to endure. Having to escape from a marriage to an older "not-so gentlemanly" gentleman, arranged by her mother caused me to root for her to escape. Hester Delafield represents everything negative about wealthy, domineering, and controlling mothers who only want to increase their own power and prestige rather than being motherly in the slightest.

When Isadora Delafield escapes to Pennsylvania, she is able to find out who she really is and what she is capable of, despite her privileged background. When she becomes the housekeeper for Ian MacKenzie's adopted parents, neither of them expect to find the other interesting, which reminds me of when my husband and I met many years ago. But sometimes those encounters lead to the best conclusions.

Mysterious incidents, four children and more add to the dynamics of this story. I found the book well-written, the characters intriguing and the storyline believable. So check this book out for yourself. I received a copy of this book in exchange for my fair and honest review.

Can I just say, I LOVE Jen Turano's books? I have always enjoyed historical and humorous fiction. When you mix those two together...well, you get a Jen Turano book!

Flights of Fancy is Turano's newest book, the first in her American Heiresses series. True to her typical style, there are lots of laugh out loud moments garnered from the situation Isadora "Izzie" Delafield, American heiress, finds herself in. However, not everything is "hunky-dory" in her life.

Fleeing from a precarious situation involving a dastardly Duke her mother wants her to marry, Izzie finds herself at the Glory Manor. Glory Manor is home to a menagerie of animals and people, including cows and chickens that prefer the indoors and four adorable orphans.

Between the "normal" goings on at Glory Manor, there are undercurrents of menace, too. As the characters begin to learn more about each other, they also learn more about themselves and their purpose in life.

Flights of Fancy doesn't have as much of the Gilded Age as most of Turano's books have; nonetheless, it is still very enjoyable. She has a way of interweaving valuable life lessons and Biblical insights into her stories that leave you thinking about your own life.

I received the book from NetGalley and Celebrate Lit through Bethany House Publishers. However, I was under no obligation to post a review.

    Heiress to Housekeeper
    January 18, 2019

Isadora is an American heiress who has lived a very pampered life. When faced with a possible marriage to an older, questionable man, Isadora decides to run away to the countryside and work as a housekeeper. After disheartening attempts in finding a placement, details fall into place that have her serving as housekeeper for Ian MacKenzie's adopted parents.

It does not take long for Izzy's shortcomings as a housekeeper are made known. How could a pampered heiress know how to wash laundry or well, boil water? Toss in a few orphans, a cow that wants to be indoors and chicken or two, well there might be a few laughs!

But wait! Ian has worked his way from poverty to successful business man. He doesn't have time to be attracted to this odd housekeeper. He needs to marry someone from New York high society so he will be fully accepted by those gentlemen he works with. He has the money but needs the name. Ah, the plot thickens!

I truly hate when reviewers spoil the plot. Truly. No worries of a plot reveal here. What you really want to know is if this book is worth being placed on your TBR pile, am I right? Let's see if I can help.

I gave Flights of Fancy three out of five stars. While some may view that as a low or ho-hum rating, please know it is not. A three star rating means that I enjoyed this book but I would not likely read it again. I found it a bit slow in the beginning and had to push myself to keep reading. It did pick up about a fourth of the way in. I do enjoy Turano's humor and dialogue in her books; they always make me smile.

I appreciate that Turano did not make Isadora's character shocked and astonished at every aspect of housekeeping. While she has been pampered and spoiled, it had just been the life that Isadora knew. She had never been faced with any other option. How she lived was what was expected of an heiress. When Izzie was faced with the duties of a housekeeper and taking care of oneself, she jumped in wholeheartedly.

The plot was a bit predictable. There was a certain point in the plot that I was expecting and was a bit surprised at how quickly it was resolved. In comparison to other books by Turano, it seemed the interactions between Izzy and Ian were lacking. It did offer humorous situations and the beauty of family (however they come together).

If you enjoy lighthearted, funny reads with a historic backdrop, then definitely add Flights of Fancy to your TBR pile. And if you haven't read anything by Turano before, you might want to grab a few. She is always entertaining.

To begin with I love the inspiration for this story. A real life what if! So many times I have wondered about how some situations might have turned out differently. Author took one with her creativity turned it into a wonderful Christian novel. This historical romance is filled with everything readers enjoy. I found romance, humor, animals, inspiration, action, adventure, and children along with a nice Christian message.

Author Turano has an enchanting style of writing. She is a witty and extremely talented storyteller. Her characters are well described and easily relatable. The main and even secondary ones were well rounded. Some were charming and lovable and others downright villains. Reading this book transported me back to 1885 and dropped me onto a farm. Within the first chapter I became invested in the book and did not want to stop reading. I was hooked. Poor Isadora being pursued by a repulsive older man. Yes, I could feel her disgust and outrage! Her emotions transferred to me.

The conversations between characters were plentiful and always a favorite part of any book for me. Dialogue flowed smoothly without sounding forced. The descriptions were historically accurate and I even learned a thing or two. The farm setting was adorable. This book had me smiling from ear to ear.

This 385 page paperback was extremely well written, well researched, and well planned. Parts of the storyline took me by surprise. I love twists and turns in fiction. It keeps me from being bored. Flights of Fancy also had many moments that made me giggle. The humor in this is literally laugh out loud great. Yes, I was well entertained and also inspired. The lessons of God's Grace and plans for us, the importance of praying, and of becoming a better person were woven perfectly throughout the story.

Definitely this gets a recommendation from me. Anyone would enjoy reading this sweet book. Historical fans, romance fans, inspirational fiction fans all would be captivated. I certainly was. This would be another good Book Club read. There is so much to discuss over coffee or tea with friends. It earned 5 out of 5 stars from me.

A reader copy was provided but I was under no obligation to write a review. All thoughts are my own, honest ones.

Flights of Fancy by Jen Turano is an absolute joy to read! Ms Turano tells the story of an enthusiastic young girl who has to suddenly go into hiding to avoid marrying a dangerous man. The adventure is only beginning at that point! She finds herself in such a delightfully interesting home where cows come inside and the homeowner acts like a chicken...you just have to read it to find out why! Set in Pennsylvania during the Gilded Age, Flights of Fancy takes us back to 1885. A time of heiresses and suitors, of carriage rides and balls, this book has lovely scenery and fascinating characters. I've always been fascinated by the Gilded Age and the mansions left behind that tell the tales of that time period. This book brings the Gilded Age fully alive and made me fall in love with the time period all over again. It brings such an interesting take on this time period that is interesting on its own, with its more rural setting. What really sets this book apart is a plot full of danger and hilarious antics. It's quite a combination and it hooks the reader from the start. I highly recommend this book. I received a digital copy of this book with no obligations. These opinions are entirely my own.
