Here to Help Learning is a biblically-based, multi-level writing curriculum that integrates filmed instructional DVDs with notebook pages and parent mentorship. Watch the lesson segment (filmed on-location!) that provides the majority of instruction; at the cue, the stop the video to lead the discussion or activities through fully-scripted lessons. Students create a learning notebook using their notes, drawings, and the student worksheets.
The full Here to Help program is split into two levels: Paragraph Writing (Grades 1-3) and Essay Writing (Grades 4-6), each of which is comprised of three "Flights." Parents can choose to start on any flight within the broader level as each is inclusive and can be used in any order (with the exception of Essay Flight 3-for this book it is recommended that students have completed Flight 1 and/or Flight 2). Lessons progress from beginner to advanced levels within each book; instruction and topics are unique to each year. Each "flight" of either Essay or Paragraph writing covers one year of instruction (32 lessons). Lessons are usually scheduled twice a week, with video instruction taking place on one day, and the "flying solo" independent work on the other. Spelling, grammar, and handwriting instruction is not provided.
Flight 3 is unique in that it's a capstone "Write a Book project." A full one-year journey through the writing process, by the end students will have completed a 6-chapter book. Lessons cover character development, storyboarding, and other story-writing concepts. In addition, "Meet the authors" sections provide author interviews to inspire students as they listen to real-life writers.
The "Essay Writing Flight 3 Student Workbook & Language Helps Booklet" features the pages students are to tear out and place in a three-ring binder. Pages include a "language helps" reference booklet and a variety of worksheet forms for each step in the process. Instead of multiple projects, lessons are broken up into the same writing process they've been using, but on an expanded scale.
The "Essay Writing Flight 3 Teacher's Guide & Lesson DVDs" contains an overview of the curriculum and the writing process; scripted lessons are provided for each week's lesson and are organized by writing project. Quick reference language charts are also included. The six lesson DVDs are in the back of the teacher's book.
Grade 4-Grade 6. Workbook is NOT reproducible and is consumable; each child must have their own.
