Tenney takes readers to Esther's pre-Islamic Persia to uncover the secrets that helped her win the heart and gain the ear of the king and save her people from destruction. A Jewish girl of no royal heritage was chosen to become the Queen of Persia. Was it her beauty alone, or did she know an important and mysterious truth? Tenney challenges his readers to move beyond formal petitions or even "storming the gates of heaven" to that intimate embrace of worship where the bride's petitions move the King's heart and where kingdoms, people, and situations begin to shift like pawns on a divine chessboard.

RecipesDealsEtcAge: 35-44Gender: female1 Stars Out Of 5concerning theologyMarch 5, 2015RecipesDealsEtcAge: 35-44Gender: femaleTommy Tenney's book Finding Favor with the King is the story of Esther. Tenney writes to draw connections from how we should prepare for and engage with God using Esther's own life choices as a model.
This book was two very interesting parts. The details included in all the history and ritual surrounding Esther and the culture of the time is very informative. The other part is a Tenney's attempt to show examples through scripture of how as Christians we need to be preparing and pursing relationship with God.
As a whole book, I found this to be a very frustrating to read. Tenney's ties of Esther to how we as current day Christians did not hold water. From the very beginning Tenney writes of the book of Esther as a love story. He obviously holds her in high regard, praising Esther for her choices and wisdom, but his praise is all opinion. Tenney says "I'm convinced that Esther's commitment to love set up a transformation in the king's heart". Leap being made here is that Esther loved the King before becoming his wife. Another, more honest view of this, is that Esther knew the King had murdered or removed his wife, and had likely disregarded many women before her, so as a survival skill Esther tried to show the King she respected him. Another stretch is when Tenney says that Esther had to prepare for the her night with the king for a year because she wasn't good enough just how she was, and then ties this to how we as Christians need to prepare for our encounters with God. Frankly, this is just bad theology.
When not trying to make connections between Esther and our own relationships with Go this book actually makes some great points about how Christians need to be aware of their true intentions in choices they make when pursuing relationship with God.
I would not recommend this book.

Every now and then, a book comes along that forces you to slow down and really pay attention to what you are reading. Pay attention to what you are experiencing as you are reading. Pay attention to what you are learning from what you are experiencing as you are reading.
Every now and then, a book comes along that transforms your life.
FINDING FAVOR WITH THE KING: PREPARING for YOUR MOMENT in HIS PRESENCE is just such a book, in my own humble opinion.
Author Tommy Tenney, an international speaker and author has always been a challenging read for me, for a number of reasons. One, he doesnt pull any punches. He speaks from the heart, and his heart is tuned to listening to his Father. If you dont want to hear the truth, dont open this book.
Two, Tommy Tenney can COMMUNICATE!!! He uses illustrations, analogies, personal anecdotes, Scripture, commentary . . . whatever it takes to get his point deep into the heart of the reader. He uses every tool in the shed to make sure that you get the point.
Three, Tommy Tenney doesnt waste time. He gets right to the point. But he does so in a way that completely covers the point, without losing your train of thought. He shows you where hes coming from, lets you know when hes got there, tells you where hes going . . . and he also shares with you the importance of the point that is currently under discussion. He tells you how to put that particular point into action in your life, as well. You learn from Tommy Tenney and it doesnt even feel like learning at all.
In this latest book by Tommy Tenney, the author places the book and the life of a young Jewish girl by the name of Haddassah. We know her better by the Bible book that bears her name Esther. FINDING FAVOR WITH THE KING has become my favorite commentary on the book of Esther. Tommy Tenney covers the historical / cultural background of Esther with the skill of a seasoned scholar, and shares the significance of those historical / cultural issues with the passion of a pastor (sorry, my Baptist roots are showing!) For instance, were you aware that the other participants in the beauty contest didnt get to go back home? They remained in the kings harem . . . for life.
Were you aware that the gallows that Mordecai prepared for Haman was not intended for hanging but for impalement?
But the importance of the book is found in the application. Tommy Tenney looks at Esther with fresh eyes, and shows us how important it is for every one of us to prepare for our own moment in His presence. FINDING FAVOR WITH THE KING is not a task for an hour, or a day . . . it is a task for a lifetime. And oh, what a day that will be when we finally get our moment with the King!!!
Thank you, Tommy! I wish they had an option for 6 stars!

Cheryl-Lee Raine3 Stars Out Of 5September 26, 2008Cheryl-Lee RaineI suppose that I enjoyed this book - to an extent. I was very excited the moment I read the cover as I love reading the story of Esther in the Bible. I also was happy to see that Tommy Tenney had written it so I was full of anticipation. However, I was rather disappointed. I struggled to get into it from chapter 1 and I kept on going but I still battled with the text. I was rather disappointed that this happened but, on a more positive note, some of the stuff mentioned was awesome!! Sadly I couldn't rate this any more than 3 stars because it was great in some places and extremely disappointing in others.
Peggy Dill5 Stars Out Of 5September 8, 2008Peggy DillThis is an awesome book. I've just about finished it. I chose to read it slow as to let the truths sink in. I highly recommend it to anyone. It truly has been a Word from the Lord for me at this time in my life.
